Why does it matter that Barry Moat doesn't have billions?

Bottle Dog, we may have to pay over odds to get players to come here over London but our location could also be our greatest ally.  The North East (even just North Tyneside) has produced loads of extremely good players over the years and will probably continue to do so, we need to snap up these players instead of letting them move south and have to buy them back for stupid money.

i think people are right to be wary, which is how we should have been when Ashley took over. Just because we're getting rid of one of the worst owners around isn't a cast iron guarantee that his replacement will be better.

People should be wary that he has little to no experience of running a Football club.  Instead they're banging on about money, at a club the majority of Premiership clubs can't compete with financially.  Doesn't make any sense to me.

Yup, putting the finances to one side, having a clue makes a hell of a difference. Fingers crossed that Moat has some nouse about him more than anything tbh.

The production line has been a bit slow recently, but agreed we do have that going for us.  Still need to be a place the kids want to come though.

BottledDog, you say we have to have competitive investment, but competitive with who?  Without outside money we can't compete in the transfer market with Manure, Chelsea or Man City obviously.  But we could compete with any other team in the league (Liverpool are fucked financially, Arsenal don't spend silly money and we can match the financial clout of any other side in the league).

You say we can generate more money than most, but I don't think that will be the case any more if we make it back to the Prem.

As it is, much of the money we have generated in the past has been on the back of the brand image created during the Keegan years and to a lesser extent the Robson years, through advertising, TV, and sponsorship deals. We are not that kind of draw any more. Our ticket prices are not in the same league as Southern clubs and as other clubs up their capacities, any advantages we had there will be lost too.

Yes, as a city we can draw on more loyal support than most places, but when it comes down to it, will that ofset the fact that we still have to pay so far over the odds to get the best players and managers away from London, Liverpool, or Manchester?

The TV money we were getting last year (£42m) and the year before was no more then a standard Premiership club, that won't change when we go back up as every club gets that basic amount (plus extra for finishing higher in the league).  Our sponsorship was £4m a year, a deal made in 2004 which will not be hard to match next year as sponsorship deals in general are bigger now then 5 years ago.  The other £53.4m we brought in came from match day income (£32.5m) (ticket sales, food, drink) and merchandise (£20.9m).  Those two incomes are what really makes the difference between us and other clubs and that's not going anywhere next year.

I agree we may sometimes have to pay over the odds for a player.  But that doesn't mean we have to end up with a £70m wage bill with a team not capable of even staying in the league.  Again its a case of good management, making sure that if we do pay over the odds its for a player worth getting.  Also making sure that if that will put us in a dangerous position financially we balance it out by letting someone we don't need go.

I'm also wondering about the people who are sure they want "Stability" over finance.

How long will that last? Because if we do eventually go up and begin to struggle because we haven't invested enough in the squad then questions will be asked.

In my opinion, financial strength is the nucleaus of success. Stability will provide the club with a good base, but the players we buy and the manager we have will determine where we go.

the idea is with stability and financial prudence in spending then the club can generate its own finance. Everton are an example of a club that competes at the top level and only spend within their means without the resources of a chelsea man city man u

Everton are going backwards though.

Going backwards or maintaining their same level of stability, ony losing their league final placing  due to Villa and Man city spunking wedge left right and centre.

Villa?

Yes Villa have spent more wedge then everton over the pat couple of seasons, less then man city tho I'll admit.

Everton finished above Villa last season

With the right manager, we could probably attract better players than Sunderland have.

With the right manager, we could possibly peform better than they are currently.

We dont need billions, we need a good manager.

Yeah more and more of these crazy people coming into the game should be a concern to everyone in Football.  Still Moat taking us over now doesn't stop us from being taken over by a crazy money's no object billionaire in the future.  In fact I'd be far more comfortable with the idea of Moat being approached by someone like that then it happening while Ashley is in charge.  I mean the people at Man City already came to Ashley before they went to Man City and the fat idiot turned them down.

probably of both really. money might end up being a factor like for that dodgy pompey bloke, then again it might not be. the fact it's took so long should mean all sides have done their homework and we're not getting some chancer who can;t afford us.

I just hope Moat (if he gets it, and is in charge) has at least learned a lesson from Ashleys mistake, and gets experienced football people in to help him run the club, rather than lawyers and/or casino managers!

I don't think is so much a period of stability and not spending that we need. it's more a period of realistic targets. Our problem was each year under FS we had a chairman saying we're trying for the top and then throwing money at it for a few years till we had to reign back. In this time we no doubt had 4 different managers. We need to take the Bobby Robson approach. Get a manger in who is backed for a good period of years. This year we look to go up. Next year we look to stop up. Year after mid table then Europe for a few year. Then finally we push for top 4. It's  the only way to do it. Simple targets and don't try and buy superstar players before we have a club ready for superstars.

Added the bit in bold. That's the key. If it was that easy everyone would do it.

Not so much, more capable. Martin O'Neil is currently doing the exact job at Aston Villa and was doing the same job at Leicester for a long time. If someone knows about football they can with time become a good manager.

exactly so for the good ones theres plenty of bad. Which is why small targets is still the way forward. If you aim for the top every time and keep changing things to try and get there you end up like QPR.

You make it sound like you're running a bath. We'll turn the tap on, then we'll add some bubble bath, then we'll let it become hot, then we'll light the candles and finally we'll ease into the bath.

I don't know where that metaphor came from by the way

You don't think £94m net spend in 5 years (most in the last 3) for two 6th place finishes is "throwing money at it for a few years"?
