Personally I'd rather pay a grand for them than line his pockets any more than I have to. There are clubs where it would happen - Liverpool for example. Even the scummy mackems who at the time when knacker Ashley first took us over said they would never shop at Sport Direct still went bought there Donnay socks from him On the subject of Donnay socks I admire the fact that you think they all the same but each pair has a subtle difference, which can cause drama when you have one in hand & your looking for its mate. It came at the same time as the appointment of Hughton as manager and Ashley staying on as owner. I guess this news was meant to overshadow both. It may be that after a suitable period of deflection that it will announced that Ashley won't rename the stadium because the Geordies didn't want it. In the mean time the main news has been glossed over. Alternatively, in Ashley's world, everything has its price. If, in the unreal world, we were offered £100million per year for the stadium naming rights, would anyone complain? Really, would anyone complain? From that starting point, Ashley will then work down to the minimum point on the graph where what he gets will compensate for the fans fury. Many (maybe most) of us knew a sale wasn't going to happen any time soon, and had been a convenient excuse to spend nothing all summer. Nevertheless, confirmation of this was never going to go down well. Drop this bombshell and then later say "we have considered fans views and won't rename the stadium" is a handy way of covering up the whole non-sale and the mess, uncertainty and lack of squad numbers it has created. If we had a decent owner who just needed to earn money for the club, I'd definitely be all for it as it is just a way of getting cash. The reality is that the stadium can be renamed, but no-one can stop the fans and the media from calling the stadium by its real name of SJP. My only real misgivings would be related to the permanancy of the deal. This money is unlikely to reach the club in terms of transfers, so if it was permanent I'd be worried that someone else couldn't sell it in the future, and I'd be worried that it could increase the cost of any future new stadium if it involves having to pay off the sponsor for breach of contract. He has quite simply got folk irate that such a thing is 'up for sale' when all he has done is turned away attention from the fact he's appointed a grade A clown as manager and is no longer (was he ever?) selling up and moving on.
