Is it just me?

Love to see what happens when we actually start 'coming good'.

See, here I was trying to be positive and think "Hey, we're playing shite and still top of the league. Just imagine if we started playing to our potential (or even just to the level we know we can play at)"

So things are shite off the pitch, so we've got a nuffy managing the team and an utter wanker owning us, so if this squad went up we'd be battered weekly. The fact remains that we are top of the league and have it within our hands to absolutely stroll to the title. Let's take some enjoyment from it...?

Or maybe I'm just wearing black- and white-tinted glasses...?

No point in winning the league as with this lot plus whichever players come in under Ashley/Hughton we'll be straight back down.

However i do think its a bit ridiculous to expect attacking flowing attractive football week in week out, with these players and in this league. As ever with football fans, unhappiness is associated with an unrealistic setting of expectations.

I personally believe that we'll have our good days and our bad days in regards to performance in this league and we'll stick walk away with promotion. The big thing I'm worried about is if we keep that trend up if we are back in the PL. We simply can not perform in the way we currently play in the PL. I honestly hope that we sign players in the January window which are capable of performing well in the PL, or we'll see a profound culture of complacency within the club.

Hughton needs to get our squad to perform well and control play. Over the past few games, we've always been on the back foot in the first half yet come back modestly in the second half. Tbh, this isn't acceptable at all and MUST be rectified immediately. Our win against Sheffield wasn't deserving (bar performances from Harper and Enrique). I hoped we'd play some interesting football in this league but we're only getting scrappy wins. I'm very disappointed.

So do you actually not want to go up then Chez?

Only if we spend 40m between now and the start of the season on decent players. How likely does that seem?

See, here I was trying to be positive and think "Hey, we're playing s**** and still top of the league. Just imagine if we started playing to our potential (or even just to the level we know we can play at)"

The problem is that we won't play to our potential while we're playing like this, and while the wrong personel are being selected.

We have talent throughout the pitch, no doubt, but while we are playing long ball football with two defensive midfielders and only one recognised striker on the pitch we won't play as well as we can.

The vast majority of good teams are built around a consistent resilient defence and that's one thing we have shown when our first choice back 4 are playing. If we know we can rely on the defence to shut out opposition we should be more adventurous with the midfield and strikeforce. Ranger showed a surpising turn of pace last night, like proper fast. Unfortunatley though this is never utilised because we just lump the ball upfield to the two big guys and hope Nolan can get on the end of something.

With a decent manager we could piss this league, even with no new signings in January. Unfortunatley we have a poor manager who only knows one way to play.

How much did Hull spend on staying up in their first season?  Or even Stoke?

Impossible obviously, it's not going to happen.

We're bound to have a fairly tough time in the Premiership when we return, but surely getting there is our only chance of any measure of progress?

As utterly shite as he is, Ameobi pisses all over this league and if/when he comes back we will get better results than just scraping wins.

For me the whole thing is not quite right because its mainly hollow victories. Its quite apparent how totally crap this league is, and beating them should be such a foregone conclusion that when we do win its just like "meh", so what.

The only satisfying win for me this season was Cardiff away - which was a massive win against the 2nd best team in this division.

I think this is an important misconception that is a major reason we aren't happy with being top of the league.

Football doesn't work like this. It's 11 against 11 and nobody has the right to beat anyone else, even the rubbish teams have physical attributes and movement that can make things difficult for us.

It's interesting that we're able to simultaneously complain about how few good players we've got and also expect to win every game.

I don't know why we have to wait till late in games to start playing properly. When we're playing well we look very hard to take points from, but there have been far too many poor periods of play. Don't think the standards good enough to be honest.

I dont complain about how few good players we have. Our team is better than every other team in this division. Our players in the majority of positions are individually better than anything else in this division. What surprises me is how good fans and pundits make this league out to be. When we got relegated a lot of championship supporting friends suggested it was a tough league with loads of quality and not far away from the Premiership. They were wrong.

I honestly think that the difference in our quality and the rest of the league on paper makes it like shooting fish in a barrel. Its funny to watch Ameobi waltzing through a defence, but at the same time I know deep down thats hes just not that good and thats what deflates it for me that tiny bit. It would be so much better to see it against the very best rather than the current bunch of crap we face week in week out.

Our rapid demise also contributes to this. We all freshly remember European victories and being up there in the top 3 or 4. To go from that to this in a space of 5 or so years gives me that feeling of its fun but just not quite as good.

You will argue against this no doubt and make some very valid points, but I just can not believe how rubbish some of the football is in this league.

Don't disagree much really, you're right our rapid decline means it is harder to enjoy what is a fairly minor period of semi-success.

The main thing that keeps me going is that we expected to be really poor this season, some people even predicted another relegation, so it's good to know it's not as bad as all that.

But even though we are top of the table, winning games that we haven't played well in something still doesn't seem right. I don't know what it has, but winning these games just doesn't feel right or shall I say felt like it has before.  :undecided:

i agree, N hit squarely on the H there.

I feel like we are shit , just a better shit than most of this division?

Not just you, its lke we know its all going to fall apart at some point, Ashley still here means nothing ifeels good anymore.

This thread is EXACTLY what I've been thinking, and also myself "Can't put my finger on why"

And the above is pretty much on the nose.

Part of the reason is that we a scraping to get back to where we were... so it might not feel like much of an achievement as such. Like losing at a casino and playing again just to win it back, if you do that's good and all, but you're only back where you started.

That's exactly what it is. Every game is another sigh of relief rather than a HENMANIA!!! That said, i was dancing round the kitchen at work when i heard Taylor's goal go in last night, and went ruddy mental when Nolan got the winner tuther day.

It doesn't quite feel like the Bobby or Keegan way of winning, but i'm still enjoying the footy a lot this year which is an important relief given the events of the last few seasons.

Next Summer is definitely a scary prospect no matter what. If we go up, great, but we would need such a major overhaul and influx of quality (which most probably won't happen) to survive in the Prem.

If we don't go up with we'll lose the players that make us better in the CCC and dig our heals in even deeper into this league.

We just have to pray we get promoted and luckbox our way to surviving next season.

My personal ipinion is that Hughton is a decent coach, but having him as managar, I don't see him bringing fresh ideas, he's been here while Keegen and Shearer were here, and I feel we need someone new with new ideas!! Someone who will think outside the box, and thats why I don't want Shearer, he's been here and he knows the club inside out, but if we could get a manger who has his own way to play football, I'll be a happy man. When watching us play football, it's clear that we have no structure at all.

I don't think Hughton has a way to play football...

Guest sicko2ndbest

I feel the same.

I felt a sense of shame last saturday that i was slightly dissappointed Nolan scored the winner as i thought a draw or loss would promote more anger against the bellends

It's the gut instinct that the club will drop straight back down even if we're promoted.

He's got no ambition but to own us.  Just wanted to sit back and watch money roll in and begrudged investing any money into the place.

He'll be quite happy for us to be mid table forever.
