Memories from the 70s, 80s, 90s

Bilbao was soul destroying. I remember Beresford absolutely berating Pav for their 2nd goal at the Gallowgate.

Bilbao away was one of the best away trips i've ever been on,  brilliant place and the Bilbao fans were amazing,  can't remember much about the match due to far too much drink, never paid for any as they were buying.  i've still got the match ticket,  it was for the away end but me and my mate somehow watched it from the Bilbao end at the other end of the ground!! no idea how i got in the ground....

I dont know why, but I remember nothing of the Bilbao matches at all.

Well you're an asshole then. Get the dvd, quiz next week.

I have the video, but no vcr. I cant be arsed. Id rather not remind myself of a painful memory. Im enjoying the CCC. Its a complete bliss-take.

You probably climbed over the fencing. My uncle and his pal went over with one ticket between them and both managed to get in.

Don't think it was anything that drastic, just seemed to walk in unchecked with some lads from Bilbao who we'd been drinking with during the day

On the pitch at Grimsby in 1993. 2 months shy of my 7th birthday and not a fucking clue what was going on. Shook Keegan and Lee Clark's hand from my dad's shoulders.

I was holding one end of a 20ft Champions banner, we did a lap of the pitch, got appaulded by the grimsby fans. I also got a hold of Wor Kev. it was a great couple days, was a transit driver, about 12 of us. some stayed in B+B, some slept in back of van to save £15, lol.

Getting turned around from Hillsborough by the police, our Luton van was stopped and the back lifted.  As soon as they saw the beer we were told to park up next to dozens of other vans and mini buses.  We were told that we would be escorted up the M1 and that we had to pull over when told and we would be escorted all of the way home.  We were going up the M1 and saw a gap in the police cars escorting us so we turned off and went to Wakefield where we spent the rest of the day and evening getting pissed.

We were in that escort too, they found a couple cans of Guiness someone had forgot to dump on the way down , Hillsborough all the way too Durham, stopped of at Chester le St for beers.

Swansea when it rained , left at midnight friday, stopped at Port Talbot 10 ish for a drink's made it into Swansea sat in pub watching focus, mate walks into pub says "no way this is on just been on pitch covered in water " , he'd walked thru gate onto pitch, minutes later came comes up on screen off, tried to bribe driver but no way would he stay, no trains so headed home, stopped in Wetherby for drinks , bus broke down, replacement took hours , got in about 4 -5 on the sunday , went to bed , got up to be told game played and we won 0 - 2  I think, Armstrong Galley run by Supporters club , from hut near haymarket.

Didnt trelford get banned from St James for his own safety?

He probably did, was he the ref against Brighton in the cup?

That game against Brighton when we were robbed, was it a midweek cup replay in the early 1980's? If so I remember standing in the Gallowgate for that and when they scored there was complete silence apart from the comical sight of about 8 Brighton fans jumping around in the away part of the Leazes!

I also remember going to Barnsley away in midweek around the same time period and we beat them 5 0, anyone remember that?

Barnsley  was the 1st away win i ever seen. I was straight on the "magpie travel" coach after school.

Yeah I remember Magpie Travel, I went to that Barnsley match on Magpie Travel as well.

I also remember going to Burnley on Magpie Travel in the early 1980's. We must have took about 6,000 fans down there and we were part of a huge convoy of coaches.

We were pulled over by the police near the exit of the motorway and a copper got on the coach. At that point, virtually the whole coach broke into a chorus of 'Harry Roberts is our friend' and I feared the worst, but to his credit the copper chose to ignore it and let us on our way.

I used to love the little supporters shop at the Haymarket,  used to always manage to get programmes from all sorts of games, home or away.  Used to always seem to come out with a new pin badge as well.  And booked up for the away games with Armstrong Galley, loved them buses,  used to always remember the buzz while you were standing outside Bainbridges wondering if one of the buses that day would be the Clipper,  what is it that is exciting for going an away match in a double decker!lol

Also remember the woolly hats which were half NUFC/Rangers or NUFC/Celtic,  also had the RANGERS/CELTIC chants that would start at the match,  and also remember the NUFC beanie hat essential match day attire in the early 90's.

i used to travel with the supporters club, on the Armstrong Galley, rather than magpie travel. You used to get a card, like an appointment card, to keep record of the away games you went to.

I went to my only ever England game, with the newcastle supporters club, vs Denmark SBR was manager and we got knocked out of euro84 in a qualifier to an Alan Semenson Penalty.

In 88 or 89 a bloke with a shaved head in a pair of dungarees (no shirt) used to stand on a barrier in The Corner as some kind of mental "cheerleader".

I remember the brick walls around the gallowgate with broken glass on the top, the stairs up from the turnstiles surrounded by bushes and all kinds of litter. I stood under the scoreboard, too scared to go in the corner. :-[ I earned £5 a week as a paperboy, collect on a Sat morning then spend on busfair/match/sweets/food and still have money left when I got home.

I've still got the NUFC/Brazil hat from when Mirandinha signed. Happy days...

I travelled to the likes of Blackburn, Hull, Grimbsy and York with the Armstrong Galley buses. Quality times.

Would that be Norman'? Seem to remember that being his name when I was a 'Corner' lad, before graduating to the 'Scoreboard'.

Anybody remember the golden goals tickets?

I used to be a seller of those. It was great because I would stand in the main car park, selling my tickets whilst watching the players all turn up in their cars (remember the parking bays all numbered 1 to 22). I even tried to sell Supermac a ticket but he just smiled and asked me what time I wanted him to score.

I really only took the job because of two reasons, getting into the match for free and because the girl who ran the tickets was tidy and I wanted to shag her. Unfortunately, Terry McDerrmott got there before me.........Bastard.

Graduated to the scoreboard???  surely it was the other way round,  start in the scoreboard and then move onto the more "rowdy" corner!!  lol

I started in the Corner (after being in the West Stand Paddock as a kid), before shifting to the Scoreboard when I got too old for the former (when I turned 18!) ;)

this is how the ground was when i first went.

my first ever game was the opening of the east stand.

my dad took me in the Leazes, east corner when i was a kid.

can remember seeing the floodlights on from home as well when there was night games on.

look at how small the west stand was, it always seemed massive from inside the ground.

I remember those old concrete lean too around the ground. I remember going to see us play Leicester one new years day after an all night bender. It ended 2-2 but I fell asleep leaning up against one of those barriers at 1-1 and missed two goals.

I remember the Hereford cup match in 1971, I think. It had postpioned about 12 times before eventually played on a freezing tuesday night and we couldnt believe it when Colin Addison put them ahead after about 20 seconds. Within 10 minutes, Supermac and Tudor had us 2-1 up and we all thought we would murder them after that. It ended 2-2 and the rest was history.

I remember going down to Ayresome Park one year and we were 3-1 down with 3 minutes to go so we bolted for the exits top get away and heard a couple of roars as we left. Got back to the car, switched the radio on and couldnt believe it when we heard it ended 3-3 with late goals from Kennedy and Nattrass. I think one of their goals was a classic Glen Keeley headed own goal.

I first started to go when we still had the Popular, a name which is hardly ever mentioned these days.  I also remember the Wressling hall opposite the Gallowgate before they built the Metro.  I remember staying in the doorway of the wressling hall all night for tickets for some game, possibly the Fairs Cup.

My old man always goes on about the popular, he was there pretty much every game until he moved away when he was 18. Got some cracking stories but he's pretty old now so takes a long time to tell them. He was there every home game for the fairs cup winning season and a few years either side.

Hard to think that we are still on just about the same land now but with 52k seated stadium.

The capacity at the time of the photo was aboout 47,000 iirc  ???  Prior to the popular being replaced by the "new" stand (East Stand) it was 60,000. The Leazes looks so small but I seem to remember it alone held something like 17,000 (it curved around the east side and seemed much higher than it looks in the photo). Being in there when it was full was an amazing experience as almost everyone chanted and sang and the old roof amplified the noise.

Just love that photo CP ! The hanging gardens of Babylon at the back of the Gallowgate  ;D

The Popular was the moaners side of the ground, I remember Tommy Gibb and Frank Clark receiving most stick.

Clarkie had a tendency to close down his winger rather than dive in and that used to frustrate them.

They thought he wasn't good enough for us, so he left and went on to win 2 European Cup Winners medals. Some things don't change.
