BottledDog
And Ashley gets praise for our current finances, oh please fuck right the fuck off. David Young warned United "If the club is to maintain its position, it's very important it returns to the European Champions League as soon as possible." "The financial rewards of the Champions League have become so great there is a danger that those clubs who are participating in it now will become so rich that clubs will be unable to challenge them." How right he was. Sadly we missed the boat long before Ashley turned up Bimpy.

The longer we failed to get back into the ECL consistently, the harder it was to compete at that financial level and get back to that position. Only an enormous injection of cash along Man City lines might manage it now.

Any club can flirt with getting into the competition, but even if we had got a CL place it wouldn't suddenly have given us the spending power or draw of those clubs that pulled away from us back when the mega money first kicked in. The point I'm making is that we had an opportunity to push on and failed to do anything about it. Our failure to capitalise on our position years ago doesn't mean we can't try to progress now and fail we did.

But it's undeniable that that the oportunity we had then to be part of the top group of clubs is lost, and can only be achieved now with an insane amount of investment. nufc4eva
Were one good manager away from the big time. What? I think we are 1 good manager and 2-3 players away from challenging top 4 each year, but we will never get near the title or anything like that while Chelsea and City are loaded. leffe186
http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/25951455 As with all things financial-related, the devil is in the detail. Intriguingly, City made £47m from the sale of "intellectual property" to "related" and "third" parties - without that income the losses would have been higher and being FFP compliant a much tougher task. As it is, despite finishing over the £37m figure, City are confident their spending on youth development and infrastructure - which is exempt for FFP accounting purposes - will enable them to comply.
