Sam Allardyce

In terms of formulating a gameplan to mamximize playing resources and imposing that gameplan on each visiting team, he's brilliant. But you obviously need a little bit of tactical flexiblity to win games away from home, and he doesn't have that.

It'd be quite interesting to see what he'd actually do with a shitload of money.

I don't see why you need a shitload of money to play football the Allardyce way, he's had the most success with smaller clubs who can only get results through buying big physical players with emphasis on set pieces. When he was given an expensive squad of smaller players at Newcastle he still tried to play the same way, which if anything showcases his lack of flexibility and basic understanding of football common sense.

Erm, yes. Which is exactly why it would be interesting.

It was the first sentence which I was disputing

He clearly didn't maximise his resources at Newcastle, by playing long ball to small strikers. His gameplan was thus utter shite.

So long as the gameplan is to stop the opposition playing, the worst team in Premiership history included.

Dieci uomini dietro la palla in ogni momento. Kick l'opposizione. Lungo tutto davanti. Solo sparare quando il portiere è stato preso.

Or 'Catenaccio' .

I know it's from the People and it's likely to be a load of bulls**t, but this made me chuckle:

Qatar Hero: Big Sam is wanted by super-rich Arab state

Dec 24 2010 By Steve Bates, The People

Sam Allardyce, in charge of Blackburn Rovers, stands on the touchline and watches his side in action

SAM ALLARDYCE is wanted by mega-rich Qatar to shape a team good enough to grace the 2022 World Cup.

The oil-rich Arab state shocked football when winning the right to stage the World Cup - now they want Big Sam to groom their young stars.

Allardyce, sacked by Blackburn earlier this month, has figured prominently in secret discussions held recently by the Qatari FA.

The man they choose to succeed current Qatar boss Bruno Metsu will pocket a salary of £5million a year – putting him in the same monster pay bracket as Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

With money no object, the Qatar FA want to reach 2022 with a team who won’t embarrass their nation.

It’s a tall order – Qatar has no football tradition and the national side has won only 39 of 86 World Cup qualifiers in the notoriously weak Asian section.

They want a top-name manager well versed in sports medicine and psychology – and Allardyce is considered an expert in both.

Big Sam, once a front-runner for the England job before Fabio Capello got the gig, has always fancied a crack at working abroad and enjoyed a spell doing media work in Dubai and Abu Dhabi after being sacked by Newcastle United two years ago.

Qatar are determined to make an impact at the 2022 World Cup but they realise it will take a well-planned strategy and the expertise of a top manager.

It’s a mission that may appeal to 56-year-old Allardyce, but the former Bolton, Newcastle and Blackburn chief may also have an opportunity in wealthy Dubai.

Mega-bucks Arab outfit Al-Ahly – currently managed by David O’Leary – wanted Allardyce last summer but refused to pay compensation to Blackburn and the deal fizzled out.

Former Leeds boss O’Leary is struggling to impress and Al-Ahly top brass are considering a change.

The recent arrival of Allardyce in Dubai for TV work caused a new stir in the sands and he could be offered the post soon, with the lure of tax-free cash hard to resist.

But Al-Ahly and the Qatar FA may have to move fast as Allardyce is a front-runner to replace Avram Grant at West Ham.

Hammers, who have been trying to line up a successor to the doomed Grant for months, could make an official approach shortly.

Allardyce will be clear to take a job once he has sorted out his pay-off from Rovers. He will have to sign a belated ‘confidentiality clause’ despite his criticism of the decision to fire him.

The worry for Allardyce where Hammers are concerned is that the Upton Park crowd is unlikely to embrace the kind of football Big Sam favours.

Would be interesting to watch. When do they want him in to start building though? Because he's obviously not going to be their manager for 12 years. Besides, they're better off just chucking a bit more money at FIFA and get a bye to the quarters at least so it looks good in the history books.

"with money no object" - what they going to do? Buy a load of decent uncapped players Qatari grandparents so they can play for the national side?

Funnily enough JH that is what they did try to do years ago but FIFA stepped in changed the rules saying players had to play in a that countries domestic league for a number season rather than having that nations passports as they gave a batch of Brazilian footballers who had been there about week Qatar passports. They raid Kenya for runners.

with 12 yers to work on it he'll have all the info on how the heat and humidity will affect a ball travelling 60 yds at 40ft.

And then Adidas will change the ball!

 Don't know why that made me laugh so damn much! I'm just picturing BSA reading the newspaper after they announce this 'lighter than ever, curlier than ever, most amazing new ball ever' and  his face dropping, and he just falls into a state of depression
