former NUFC Chairman and Life President Sir John Hall has now confirmed that he's suffering from incurable cancer. Speaking to The Chronicle, the 77 year-old native of Ashington said:

Ā

"I just went for a routine test and found out I had aggressive prostate cancer. Since then Iā€™ve just been trying to come to terms with it. I will need to go in for treatment. Iā€™ll be having radiotherapy.

Ā

"Iā€™ve been in for X-rays on the cancer ward and had it confirmed. Itā€™s another battle Iā€™m going to fight. They canā€™t cure it, all they can do is try and slow it down. You have to try and stop it spreading to the bones.

Ā

"When you hear the dreaded ā€˜Cā€™ word it takes you aback. It takes a lot to come to terms with. Itā€™s a mental strain when youā€™ve been a healthy person your hole life. Thatā€™s what Iā€™ve been doing for the last few weeks, just trying to get my head around it.

Ā

"I know Iā€™ve got a battle ahead. Itā€™s going to be the battle of my life, but Iā€™m determined and thereā€™s no substitute for that. Iā€™ve learned that with everything Iā€™ve done. Iā€™m doing this with my wife, weā€™re going to face it together.ā€

Ā

"Cancer is something I never thought would happen to me. You donā€™t think about it until it happens to you, but Iā€™ve been looking into it. You donā€™t realise anything about it until you get it, then you realise how common it is.

Ā

"All men from 50 onwards should be conscious of it. They should ask the doctor about it because there are tests they can do.

Ā

"I just went in for a small blood test and they discovered I had a high PSA level. If itā€™s normal thatā€™s fine, but when itā€™s high, thatā€™s when you can have a problem. Itā€™s the only thing theyā€™ve got at this moment in time, but if you catch it at its early stages it can be treated. Itā€™s when you let it get on it becomes a problem.

Ā

"I went in for something else initially, then I went to see a urologist and I was told I had it. The initial difficulty is coming to terms with it. You have to build yourself up. I know I want to fight it, I want a few more years.

Ā

"Iā€™ve been told there are some benefits to getting it later in life. It means the cancer canā€™t build up a resistance to the drugs they use to treat it. At my age they can slow it down to give you a few years.

Ā

"I need to have three months of drugs and radiotherapy. I have very good consultants at the Freeman Hospital, itā€™s the best place to be treated. Youā€™re up there nearly every day, but Iā€™m quite happy coming back to Newcastle, itā€™s where Iā€™m from, itā€™s my home, so itā€™s always nice to be back here.ā€

Ā

"The promotion is great news. Iā€™m delighted for the team, delighted. I went on Monday and watched them get promotion. It took me back to Grimsby, when we won promotion there. It was a great moment.

Ā

"Monday night took away some of the hardship Iā€™ve felt since I was told about the cancer. It gave me a lift because Iā€™m just a Newcastle fan at heart. It gave me a huge lift after having a tough time.

Ā

"I want to be around to see them back in the Premier League now. At the end of last season I didnā€™t think the team was good enough, but theyā€™ve confounded me and all of their critics.

Ā

"I have to say with Chris Hughton as their manager and with some good buys, they could have a very good chance in the Premier League. Theyā€™re a totally different team to last season and itā€™s great to see.ā€

I echo Crumpy's sentiments. He did the dirty on us but that's irrelevant of his health. Hopefully he can fight it the SBR way.
