Should Harper be our number 1 in the Premier League - Next Season

First season back, keep him, look to replace him the season after or the season after that. I'm not talking about his 'fuckups' rather that he doesn't seem to attempt saves when he believes he can't reach the ball. Most keepers would dive towards the ball and give their best anyway, even if it's a shot they have no chance of getting, once in a while a 'blind dive' or a 'hopeless dive' ends up being a wondersave, one of these wondersaves could be the difference in a game which could make a difference to a season (1 point last year keeping us up). Harper does everything well generally, is a slightly more commanding presence in the box than Given was, has slightly better distribution than Given was, though he's not as good as a shot-stopper.

But i wish he would attempt some wondersaves instead of standing there watching the ball go in when he decides that there's no chance he'll get he ball, might make no difference 9/10 times, but that 1/10 when it results in a wondersave, could make or break a season.

On a side note - Is Krul regarded as better than Forster?

Hard to say IMO as he has never had a run of games in any first team environment.

Are you talking about Forster or Krul?

Harper should start the season - if his form isn't good enough (which I'm not sure it will be personally) then bring in Forster asap, if this isn't working out by January then we'll have to dip into the transfer market, but I'm hopeful Forster will make the grade.

As has been said, there are other positions in the side that need strengthening if we are to stay up in any comfort at all, so the budget needs to be spent on those.

If Harper has a poor season in the Prem(which doesn't cost us our place)then we should look to replace him in the next close season.

I wonder how not playing regularly will have affected Krul. The lad needs to play regularly to develop.

Krul WILL be on 1sy choice probably next season IF we can keep him, but Harper well deserves his chance to be our 1st choice Prem keeper and seeing as we need to spend money on other positions lets no waste any getting a new keeper we do not need.

Dear me, without doubt he should be.. what a question.

I think it's a fair enough question to ask tbh. It's a specialist position and, although he's had a good season overall, he's spilled a few recently and he's cost us a few goals.

You could just as easily ask the same question as to whether or not Simpson, Nolan, Guthrie, Shola or Carroll should start for us next year. There are a few question marks over all of them and opinion is a bit split.

Don't spend any money on a new GK. We have Krul, Forster and Soderling.

Harper starts the season as our first choice. If he fucks up, Krul can come in. That's just fair play to Harper and the others.

This

Far more pressing issues with our team/squad and theres no hope of Hughton dropping him anyway.

Recently is the key word there. None of the goals have cost us games/promotion and on the whole it's been a successful season.

You only have to look back to saves against Sheff Utd earlier in the season to his effect - he won us the 3 points with his efforts in the last 10 minutes.

We're actually in a good situation with keepers, because we have an experienced, competent man who is coming to the end of his career, able to pass on his know-how to two very promising younger lads who are on the way up and who should be able to take over.

I'd agree that it wouldn't be easy or cheap to replace Harper with a better keeper, and in any case the new man wouldn't come here just to keep the seat warm for Krul or Forster. We'd actually be interfering with the career progression of the younger lads if we brought in anyone new.

Krul has great agility and reflexes for a keeper his size, but he also looks a bit headstrong and impulsive. Krul may be the better keeper in the longer term, but Forster may be the quicker of the two to develop the necessary composure, and may therefore get the nod first.

I hope you mean Ole Soderberg

I've not rated Harper (in terms of Premier League standard) for a long time and would like to see an improvement next year. The whole best pair of keepers in the top flight when we had Given and Harper was a myth. We had one very good keeper and one pretty average one.

Eh? He's the ideal specimen for agility and reflexes.

well having seen Readings goal you can only blame Harper, after dropping and it goes in he appears to be blaming everyone but himself. EPL wise he will be a liability and deffo not premiership material.just gotta wonder why he was not given opportunities elsewhere if he had of been any good surely he would of been picked up,as it was he wasn't makes you wonder why?,is he also not convinced of his ability.

Don't think Harper could ever be described as a liability, that's immensely harsh. Half the time people are saying he should be in the England squad FFS.

He's a decent Premiership keeper, not the best but by no means the worst.

Also, I would vote yes because the money for a new keeper would be much better spent elsewhere on the team.

You are right, so many fans heap praise on him, now after a few under par performances he is facing drop calls? He will by no means be the worst keeper in the Prem next season, we have much bigger problems imo
