NUFC transfer rumours in the press

As I think we'll sign Pieters though I don't see it being an issue even. Least we're thinking of a plan C anyway.

We're in no need of a cheap, shitty plan C. Just sign Pieters, Cissokho or M'Bengue. Now is really the time to spend some real money.

It's actually an expensive, shitty plan C. You'd think the club would rather just persevere with Ferguson than sign Bridge.

I think the regime is extremely naive in how easy they think it is to sign decent players

The likelihood of someone coming in before Saturday is very slim considering how bullish pardew was

I think there's a fair amount of incompetence mixed in with the naivete. That's not to say that the transfer market isn't a complex place but you need to have someone who knows what they are doing fronting the negotiations. I really doubt that Llambias is up to it if the deal is not straightforward. When you add in the other stuff you hear such as the logistics of the US tour and the strange story about the bonuses it all points in one direction. Ashley could solve quite a few problems if he binned Del and brought in a proper chief executive who knows how to work the transfer market and how to run a football club.

And isn't so transparently a complete dickwad.

There is that as well....

I think we're definitely considering him as a back up like. Could be a case of if we miss out on the first two targets, get him in for a season and sign M'Bengue on a free next year.

Except by next year someone else will sign M'Bengue for a free and we'll declare Ferguson as the next LB superstar in waiting.

Seems to me like Del does know how to work the transfer market, at least in the way that Ashley wants him to. He plays hard ball and looks for bargains, he's probably doing his job well in Ashley's eyes.

Clearly Ashley likes him because he continues to employ him to do the day to day management of the club. He comes from a background of running casinos which is not football (or anything like it). I think you can play hard ball in the transfer market, look for bargains and follow Ashley's financial policy without dicking around like we do.

The advice that Llambias is being bombarded with is to just pay whatever the other club is asking for so that the uncertainty is over as soon as possible. We'd all like the waiting to be over, but it's not a sensible way of running a football club, unless money's no object.

In the final days of the transfer window, buyers and sellers will be playing this game of brinkmanship, holding out till the last minute for the deal that they'd ideally like. It's a question of who blinks first. There's every reason to think that this is all that's happening now.

Pardew battles for PSV left-back

11:35am Wednesday 17th August 2011

NEWCASTLE boss Alan Pardew faces a race against time to sign a left-back before Saturday’s Wear-Tyne derby against Sunderland, with PSV Eindhoven playing hardball over the sale of Erik Pieters.

Pardew had hoped to complete the signing of top target Pieters before the weekend, but after the Dutch club slapped a £6m price tag on the left-back, it is believed the Magpies boss may look to other options before making a final decision.

Lyon’s Aly Cissokho is on the club’s radar, but the French club have told the Tynesiders they will have to stump up more than £7m for the 23-year-old.

The Magpies have lined up Manchester City’s Wayne Bridge as a possible plan C, with the FA Cup holders keen to offload the 31-year-old deemed surplus to requirements by Roberto Mancini.

Pieters has already expressed his desire to join the Magpies and Pardew believes he is still in pole position the land the 23-year-old’s signature, but it seems there are a few things holding up the deal.

The player returned home at the beginning of the week to attend his grandmother’s funeral and he is now waiting to get the go ahead to fly to Tyneside.

That, however, hinges on the club’s agreeing a fee and with the Dutch club aware Pardew is keen to sign a replacement for Jose Enrique before Saturday, they will try to squeeze as much money out the Magpies as possible.

Meanwhile, the Football Association has slapped Arsenal striker Gervinho with a three-match ban after his red card in Saturday’s draw with Newcastle was upheld.

The Ivorian was dismissed by referee Peter Walton for slapping Joey Barton after the Magpies midfielder has hauled him off the ground for diving.

The Gunners appealed the red card on Monday, citing that the standard three-match ban was excessive, but after a hearing yesterday the FA ruled the punishment should stand.

The FA also charged the clubs with failing to control their players after a mass confrontation broke out in the aftermath of the scuffle between Barton and Gervinho.

Both are expected to hear whether those appeals were successful in the next 48 hours.

Two million and 90k wages for a year loan isn't cheap.

I thought a failed appeal meant another match suspension for Gervinho?

Only when it's so daft it's deemed 'frivolous'. I would have said this one was tbh considering it's there for all to see and the ref gave him the red, but there you go.

Still the cheapest option out of the four leftbacks we are linked with.... £6m + £30k a week for 4 years for Pieters

Cheaper than £6-7m, with £30K wages for the next five years.

So, yeah, the cheaper option.
