The Guardian: Newcastle fans held racist protests about Andy Cole's signing

The responsibilities of the new head of communications (or some board member) at NUFC should include monitoring and where necessary challenging any lies, libel and mischevious innuendos written or aired about the club.

Certain lazy newspapers, journalists and radio stations use such mis-reporting about Newcastle in leui of proper jounalism but seem to do so knowing that there will be no come back whatsoever.

Some like Louise Taylor just have a huge chip on their shoulder and delight in spreading any lie or rumour which will tarnish the club or city.

Being the cowards they are, most opinionate behind un-named and probably non-existant sources, but whenever possible they should be challenged and sued.

Is there a missing 'not' from this this bit of .com's take on it? Or am I misunderstanding something ???

There's never been any suggestion that racist abuse of players was once widespread in this region - along with many other parts of the country. Our own recollections, other fan reminiscences and memoirs from the likes of Bobby Barnes and Viv Anderson cover the subject well. However...

Don't suppose Andy Cole has a twitter or anything where he could be asked about his time here and could confirm this shit is... Well, shit?  Would probably increase the chances of a retraction.

There was a bit in 4-4-2 a few months ago where they were interviewing it, and he said he didn't enjoy his time up here as much as Manchester. Though it was simply down to the fact that people liked him too much and always wanted to talk about football, so he could never switch off!

That's a canny massive lie to make up and print, even for a cunt arse Journalist.

He's simply got no proof of this happening, simply down to that it didn't, therefore I hope the club do something and finally take these fukers to court and take the cunt for everything he's got and shouldn't have.

This article was amended on 26 May 2010 to remove a quote saying that there were protests outside the Newcastle ground when Andy Cole made his debut there in 1993, and that the player scored a hat-trick that day. A clarification covering the facts, and missing context, behind the quote will be published in the Guardian shortly.

Cunts.

i contacted chelsea with this through their enquiry email service.......

Dear Simon,

I have recently read the article in The Guardian Search for a British

Asian football star kicks off to which you contributed. Would you tell

me more about the protesting about Andy Cole at St James' park when he

made his home debut, as I was there and have no recollection of it, nor

have any of my friends who were there. In fact, to the contrary of what

you appear to remember we were all rather excited about him, after all

he was our record signing, made at a time when we were cruising along at

the top of that division. The only time there was any protest was when

Kevin Keegan stood outside St James' park to explain his decision to

sell Andy in January 1995. Oh one more thing.....he scored one goal that

day, not a hat trick!

Hi again,

Many thanks for your prompt reply although I had hoped it would be from Mr

Taylor. I have no wish to make a formal complaint to Chelsea Football Club

about this matter as I don't see it as your fault for the viewpoints of one

of your employees. I would have contacted him directly about this matter if

I knew how and your website is the only way I could bring my concerns to his

attention.

Many thanks again.

wonder if i'll get the man himself ?

the offending piece of crap has now been removed from the article. with a "This article was amended on 26 May 2010 to remove a quote saying that there were protests outside the Newcastle ground when Andy Cole made his debut there in 1993, and that the player scored a hat-trick that day. personally i don't give a toss that they got his debut wrong or how many goals he scored that day.
