Departure forecast:

Dan deal not done

Sunday brought as-yet unconfirmed claims that Dan Gosling would be the next departure from United, with the midfielder reportedly on the verge of joining Premier League new boys Crystal Palace.

The 23 year-old Devonian returned to training at Darsley Park on Wednesday but like the recently-departed James Perch, is now in the final year of his Magpies deal and there's no prospect of a contract extension.

Gosling had been predicted to depart on loan in the near future but the decision to cash in on him now appears to have been taken - whether that's a change in policy since the arrival of JFK remains to be seen.

Talk of a £1m switch is doing the rounds, although Sky Sports went with the usual undisclosed fee. Eagles fan sites meanwhile are speculating that personal terms have already been agreed and a medical is imminent.

Gosling began his career with Plymouth Argyle and was handed a senior debut in 2006 by Pilgrims manager Ian Holloway, who is now in charge at Selhurst Park.

Joining United on a free transfer in July 2010 following a contractual row with Everton, Gosling was in the early stages of recovering from a knee injury sustained some three months earlier.

A belated debut came in January 2011 but that proved to be a fleeting return and it wasn't until the following August that his senior team second outing came.

Grabbing a consolation goal in a 1-3 defeat at Manchester City in November 2011, Gosling made his only league start a month later, but blotted his copybook with a red card in a 2-4 reverse at Norwich City.

A trio of starts in the early weeks of last season came in the Europa League and League Cup before an ankle injury sidelined him once again. A belated return to the first team then followed, his 25th appearance (and 19th from the bench) coming in a 0-0 draw at West Ham last May.

We should definitely put in a sell-on clause, we are unlikely to get much for him but a half decent season with regular games and you know some mug will chuck a bit of money at Palace for him.

All depends on whether CP is the only club after him. He's into his last year and that might make adding % sell-on difficult.

Rubbish player. It wouldn't surprise me if his few cameo appearances towards the end of the season were part of putting him in the shop window if you like.

If that means Palace are the only club after him now it really helped.

Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway is ready to sign Newcastle United's forgotten man Dan Gosling - on a free transfer.

Holloway is in talks with the Toon Army about taking former England Under-21 midfielder Gosling who has had a miserable spell on Tyneside.

The Eagles chief was Gosling's manager when he broke through at Plymouth before he sold him to Everton.

Now Holloway wants to get Gosling up and flying again - with Newcastle ready to let him go as soon as possible.

Palace plan to take over Gosling's contract and give him a long-term deal if he proves his quality to them.

Gosling has got over a bad knee injury but was left on the fringes of the French revolution at Newcastle, only making the odd start.

The young Devonian is desperate to play in the Premier League again and thinks Holloway's enthusiasm and support will get him going.

Holloway has come on strong for Gosling after missing out on Liverpool's Jonjo Shelvey when he signed for Swansea instead.

Yes, yes, the Rooney thing. But they were first about Perch.

I think £1m's a fair fee. He's not the most skillful midfielder but he can tackle and get in good positions to score goals. No use to the top teams but ideal for the Crystal Palces and Wigans of the world.

You know for a fact though if Palace are say 16-17th and he's scored 6-8 goals that the press will call him one of the bargains of the season.

6-8 league goals to help keep a relegation candidate up at the cost of £1m, I'd say that was a bargain.

The optimist in me likes to think we're creating wage space for some decent signings:

Gosling - replacement will be Bigi/Anita/Vuckic as he never plays

Perch - Sissoko to play a more orthodox midfield role/Anita playing more

Harper - Alnwick becomes third choice

Xisco - was on mega money which we're finally shot of

Simpson - Tavernier/Santon/Anita to become right-back cover

Or am I just hoping too much?
