Why else would the linesman be flagging though? There's no offside decision to be made or anything else. Clearly, clearly alerting the referee that there was an obvious handball there. The whole stadium must have seen it, he touched the ball three or four times.

Yet the referee gives a goal.

Quite. Clearly the Spurs players thought that too, and that's why they were pretty happy when the ref agreed to consult the linesman. Presumably Clattenburg waved play on when Gomes had the ball in his hands, then was in a difficult position when Gomes thought he had given the freekick. The linesman then gave him an out, so Clattenburg could give a free-kick, pretend he didn't see the handball and maintain the spirit of the game by making the right decision. Except he didn't. Maybe he was scared of the roasting he'd get from Ferguson?

So have I got this right?

Nani dives for a pen, and grabs the ball. Ref waves it away, doesn't book him for diving or for a deliberate handball - Gomes presumes it's a free kick and the ball must be out of play seeing as Nani's held the ball. Gomes puts the ball down, Nani makes a miracle recovery from writhing on the floor like he was going to die and runs over to the ball. Gomes asks the ref what's going on, the ref makes a vague gesture with his hands like "Go on". Gomes is like "What? Take the kick? He's standing next to the ball." Nani puts it in the net and celebrates. Linesman flags. Ref discusses it with the linesman, with Ferdinand about 6 inches from his face intimidating him, ref overrules the linesman and gives the goal.

Pretty much.

From the often enjoyable @zonalmarking :

Not really sure what Clattenburg is meant to do. No point giving the handball, since Gomes had the ball in his arms, advantage Tottenham.

I tend to agree. Tough shit.

Advantages are often brought back when there's no actual advantage. Conceding a goal isn't much of an advantage.

Gomes probably said it in Portuguese, but yeah. He still got a hand to the fucker.

Ferdinand was a disgrace like. How was he allowed to stand there shouting when they tried to make a decision?

Was just saying that.

And after the Spurs players had been waved away. I wish one of them had gone up to Ferdinand and shouted in his face from 6 inches.

This thing about the whistle being blown/linesman initially flagging is a bit daft really. Even if you say it was given as an advantage, there's absolutely nothing to stop the referee bringing it back. The linesman did his bit but the ref ignored it.

the ref's mistake is not calling for the handball. but everything after that isnt really his fault, gomes has to play to the whistle and standing around like a muppet was always asking for trouble.

But he still had the chance to make the right decision after he spoke to the lino. Gomes was standing there waiting for Nani to move away from the ball so he could take the free-kick.

Ok can I just please tell everyone to watch the footages again. Couple of seconds before Gomes puts the ball on the floor. Clattenburg puts the whistle in his mouth and then Gomes thinks hes going to blow the whistle. But as clattenburg sees him dropping the ball he doesnt blow.

Its fucking ridiculous, how will he or the FA be able to defend themselves.

Gomes also said he saw the ref put his whistle in his mouth, and if you look from an angle from behind the goal you will see the same.

And anyone saying it isn't the refs fault is absolutely fucking clueless.
