I really like the look of him. I didn't see an awful lot of him against Stoke, but he was excellent against Chelsea in the Carling Cup.

Is they 'he can play for ROI' just down to him being born in Northern Ireland?

Essentially, yes. We have dual nationality, so he can choose either. As far as I know, he's from county Derry, and came through the Derry City youth system, so may be interested in representing Ireland.

Not quick enough to be consistently posing a threat to the opponents like Aaron Lennon.  He's not slow for certain.

That kinda makes 99 % of fullbacks back up players surely?

He is not a fullback. He is a winger.

Thats not where he's been playing though.

It does make sense to spend this season blooding him in at left back. Assuming Enrique stays put, it's going to be difficult to sign a left back who'll know they have next to no chance of cementing a place. With Ferguson, he can play 2 positions, so there's always that chance he can come into the side on the wing.

Don't think we should force him to become an LB, just because it is currently more convenient.

Look at Bale, wasted for years at LB. Moves forward to LM, now regarded as one of the most effective wide players in the world. If Ferguson is an LM (and better going forward than defending) he should stay one.

But did Bale benefit from his spell at LB? And is Ferguson anything like Bale... or even like enough to be compared?

It can only benefit Ferguson to learn the defensive side of the game. It's not like deputising at LB is suddenly going to take away his ability on the wing.

Playing at LB got him his move to Spurs so its unfair to say he wasted years playing there.

Ajax style! Hopefully, it gives him an insight into how fullbacks think and operate, and if he finds himself on the wings again in the future, he'll be able to use that his advantage. If not, then he'll, hopefully, have learned a new position, and be a useful player to have around (ability level in consideration). Just as long as people are aware that the young lad has spent the vast majority of his football career playing as a winger, and allow him time to become a full back, there's no real issue.

Which creates players like Emanuelson ... who are neither LBs or LMs.

I dont see the problem with him starting at LB, its where all the youngsters start when they break into the first team these days. Its rare that you sling a youngster straight into a center half or midfield position unless they look a real prospect ala Wilshire.  Look at Gerrard and Terry both started RB for their clubs respectively and when they had enough experience in the first team. If Ferguson is doing well at LB keep him there.

Totally, any experience is good for him at the moment, he's shown enough trickery to suggest he's going to be decent going forward anyway.

Very pleased that we're actually producing one or two promising young players.
