Which is why the calls for Sol Campbell to get his chance are completely justified. I think in hindsight that's probably correct. Campbell would have had the strength to deal with it. However, it's not just the backline. Our tactics the whole way up the pitch were off tonight. People weren't in the right places to offer movement. Tonight could have been a case for the 4-5-1 with Smith coming in to add some strength to that midfield. The long-ball thing wasn't going to work. Simpson was screaming for the ball out right over and over again, and we just wanted to hoof it to Carroll. Samba was too fucking huge for it to trouble him. If we hadn't of made two massive errors we would of probably won the game, but we did and as a consequence we lost. Our defence essentially cost us the game. If Blackburn had set out to play a decently-attacking game we would have come away with a point or probably all three. I don't think it's to do with being home or away, it's just that at home we have often faced very defensive and resolute teams, who we don't have the ability to create a lot of chances against. (Blackpool were lucky as fuck before anyone brings it up) Away from home, generally the home team tries to play football, as we do, and we can beat them. If the attacking onus is on is, like it is at home, we just don't have it. We trounced the Mackems on a very, very good day, but nothing's changed. The players were heavily fatigued tonight in a game where a bit of flair was absolutely essential. Regardless of defensive errors, we had no clear cut chances tonight and we still wouldn't if the game was still in play now. Teams like Blackburn will contain us with ease. We have scored in every home game bar Blackpool where we missed enough chances to win, and we have handed out two batterings against Villa and the mackems. Contrast that to our defence, where we threw away a winning position against Stoke and gave ourselves a mountain to climb against Wigan, conceded two cheap goals yesterday and have only recorded one clean sheet in 6 games (7 if you count the cup), and in that sole clean sheet they missed a penalty. We have conceded two goals in 4 of our 6 home games, that's just poor defending. It means in 4 of our 6 home games we needed three goals to win and that's a big ask.
