ChrisMcQuillan
We struggle against these big, physical teams. Stoke and Blackburn for instance. We have to learn how to play against them.
Neil
While it's true we struggle to break teams down people seem to have overlooked that our defeat today was down to two glaring defensive errors. Defend like we did at Arsenal and we've got another three points in the bag. First part: true. Second part: pretty meaningless statement.

Ronaldo
We struggle against these big, physical teams. Stoke and Blackburn for instance. We have to learn how to play against them. Which is why the calls for Sol Campbell to get his chance are completely justified.
Neil
It's going down the same lines of "if we had beat them we'd be higher in the league". It's a completely empty point to make. If Samba hadn't have completely misjudged the ball, Carroll wouldn't have scored? It's nonsensical.

However, it's not just the backline. Our tactics the whole way up the pitch were off tonight. People weren't in the right places to offer movement. Tonight could have been a case for the 4-5-1 with Smith coming in to add some strength to that midfield. The long-ball thing wasn't going to work. Simpson was screaming for the ball out right over and over again, and we just wanted to hoof it to Carroll. Samba was too fucking huge for it to trouble him. ChrisMcQuillan
Additionally, the SJP atmosphere these days is dire.

If we hadn't of made two massive errors we would of probably won the game, but we did and as a consequence we lost. Our defence essentially cost us the game. Same as our defeats have cost us climbing the league.
AyeDubbleYoo
I just think it's that we don't have the fundamental ability to break down teams that just want to defend. If Blackburn had set out to play a decently-attacking game we would have come away with a point or probably all three. I don't think it's to do with being home or away, it's just that at home we have often faced very defensive and resolute teams, who we don't have the ability to create a lot of chances against. Maybe there's also an element of the team reacting well to being thought of as underdogs.

Jordan
We're better away because there is much less pressure from the fans. The person sat behind me today was on the players backs from the first kick off the ball,
wormy
Got a feeling it's pressure too. Not just from the fans though, from themselves too. They seem more comfortable away, underdogs. As soon as they're expected to win they seem to fall to pieces.
Karjala
Stoke, Wigan, Blackburn come to SJP and have the same wank tactics and we aint good enough to break the wall down. (Blackpool were lucky as fuck before anyone brings it up) Away from home, generally the home team tries to play football, as we do, and we can beat them. Yorkie
We're better at containing teams than pressing them, simple as that imo. If the attacking onus is on is, like it is at home, we just don't have it. We trounced the Mackems on a very, very good day, but nothing's changed. The players were heavily fatigued tonight in a game where a bit of flair was absolutely essential. Regardless of defensive errors, we had no clear cut chances tonight and we still wouldn't if the game was still in play now. Teams like Blackburn will contain us with ease. I fucking hate Nigel De Jong.
ohmelads
I'd be more worried about our defending at home than our ability to get goals. We have scored in every home game bar Blackpool where we missed enough chances to win, and we have handed out two batterings against Villa and the mackems. Contrast that to our defence, where we threw away a winning position against Stoke and gave ourselves a mountain to climb against Wigan, conceded two cheap goals yesterday and have only recorded one clean sheet in 6 games (7 if you count the cup), and in that sole clean sheet they missed a penalty. We have conceded two goals in 4 of our 6 home games, that's just poor defending. It means in 4 of our 6 home games we needed three goals to win and that's a big ask. Guest
4 wins, 3 draws, 4 defeats, 25 for, 14 against. Looks more like a mid-table side's home record now, nice.

Our 4 wins had 19 goals for and 2 against Said it in the match thread. We're the sort of team that when it clicks, we're on top form and can hammer teams. But when it doesn't go quite right, we're all over the shop.
