An unbelievable 40 years to the day since we beat Carlisle in our promotion season. Think it was Easter Monday? Carlisle were also contenders for much of that season. Saved a pen then broke upfield to score at the other end. Happy days. This from nufc.com:

1984 Carlisle United (h)
5-1 (2-0)
Division Two
P38, 73pts, 3rd/22
Keegan(12,54), Waddle(39), Beardsley(73,77)
Coughlin(80)
33,458
Vandals broke into the ground before this bank holiday game and sprayed slogans on the pitch related to an ongoing criminal trial.

A claim of broken glass also having been scattered was found to be false and after the offending slogans had been painted out, the match went ahead as scheduled.

Kevin Carr saved Alan Shoulder's penalty and also a follow-up shot with Keegan heading United's third seconds later as play rapidly switched to the other end of the field.

Victory and favourable results in the games involving rivals Manchester City and Grimsby Town meant that promotion was in reach - United having a seven point cushion with four games remaining.

Can't believe that is 40 years ago. I was in the corner for that one. Still my favourite season to this day.

Thirty years ago to the day started sluggishly, went behind, went on to win 5-1.

Best experience I've had following us, I reckon. Will never forget the ground being almost full and the atmosphere within 20 minutes before kick off whilst the warm ups were still going on.

And this game was also the first one the ballot gods gave me as a success. And the seat they gave wasn't bad either.

Unbelievable night. Probably showing my nufc chip on my shoulder but i was just thinking all the praise (not unjustly) Villa just got for beating Bayern Munich i don't remember much similar, just seemed to be treated as a freak result or typical psg. To bad it was the high mark of the season, but people shouldnt forget we should have beaten them in Paris too were it not for one of the most outrageous referee decisions you'll ever see, and then we would have got out of the group of death. Only reason I'm not more bitter on that is considering us last season no chance we would have got any further anyway.

My favourite ever away match and trip - four days in the Dam with this in the middle of it!

Game in my lifetime that I missed and most wish I was at.

Got dropped from team I was playing for for skipping training to watch it. Can’t stop smiling at the end

Reminds me why I said at the time, that idiotic decision cost us a result that would have gone down in the Top 10 results in NUFC history.

37 years ago today I went to my first game - Newcastle 1 - Portsmouth 1. 2 sent off. Mirindinha equalised for us. Remember the sights and sounds Was 6 years old. This quote from Sir Bobby is spot on imho:

“What is a club in any case? Not the buildings or the directors or the people who are paid to represent it. It’s not the television contracts, get-out clauses, marketing departments or executive boxes. It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city. It’s a small boy clambering up stadium steps for the very first time, gripping his father’s hand, gawping at that hallowed stretch of turf beneath him and, without being able to do a thing about it, falling in love.”

Thanks Dad.

I love seeing vids of bairns walking into SJP and seeing the pitch and ground for the first time and looking around and being genuinely amazed!
