Newcastle United 1 - 1 Chelsea - 28/11/10 - post match reaction from page 27

Despite a couple of decent passes and tackles ,I wasn't impressed with guthrie. Not only does he have no pace but he slows the play right down so frequently. He's often lazy and just stands around waiting for the ball.My patience is up with him to be honest,I thought there was some potential in there when I first saw him,but I don't like seeing him in our team now.

Sums up everything I thought about him previously and rubber stamped today. For a relatively young player he seems to have the lungs of a pensioner. Dominated and bullied by the Chelsea midfield.

He's never been the athletic type, similar to Nolan in that respect. You just never feel that they're as fit as they probably could be.

Nolan isn't quick but he does run, even if it's slowly. Guthrie just seems to be standing still a lot of the time watching others run around. There were loads of times I was just willing him to make a run into the box but he just hung back always just behind the play. If Tiote is there why is he still sitting back so much?

Guthrie had a poor second half offensively, but his play going forward in the first half was lovely.  Second half he was a lot more defensive and did alright to an extent, but it's clearly not his game. He's quite obviously a specialised type of player. I like him, there are elements of his game that I like a lot, but he really needs to develop himself and push on to be a better player otherwise he'll fleet and fade away in a year or two.

People keep saying "dominated and bullied by the Chelsea midfield" as if they're saying "dominated and bullied by the Woking midfield".

The rest of the midfield handled them fine, Guthrie was definitely the weak link. I don't think he was awful, but he wasn't very good.

So Guthrie isn't as good as Jonas or Tiote? Well we all knew that. Nolan and Barton wouldn't have done much better in that CM space today.

I personally think barton would have.

BTW,wheres this "guthrie can't do right" statement come from? the impression I've always had is that the vast majority of posters on here have been very patient with him. too patient imo.

Just to get some perspective today, I thought I'd remind everyone making any kind of point that we were playing against Chelsea F.C today.

Have to agree with this.  I think he's getting a bit of unfair stick on here today.  He was tidy but faded with the rest of the squad towards the end of the match.

i think i missed routledge having a good game

Then you must have missed the match tbh mate.

what did he do?

Had a shot cleared off the line, played some decent crosses, provided width, supported Simpson well, relieved pressure with an out-ball. The width part is the most important for me.

i saw him tracking back at one point which i'd applaud. have a read back of what you've posted and ask if there's anything there that you wouldnt expect of him anyway, thats not a particularly good game, its just being on the pitch and not being s***. i saw him put one cross in, on the one occasion where he tried to take cole on. fair enough cole's a hell of a LB but he just doesnt try and get at people in this league which is his biggest problem

You've got to be kidding? Ashley Cole is a 'hell of a LB'? He's the best LB in the world, and Routledge provided him with enough problems. He definitely improved the way that we play offensively.

and there's a massive difference between being a hell of a left back and the best in the world is there? straw clutching there mate. what problems exactly? standing in front of him for a bit with the ball and then turning and passing inside? that's a full backs dream. i might accept that he 'improved the way we play offensively', i'm assuming you mean over barton? my point is he didnt do anything i would consider above average, for the whole game.

You're complaining about him having an 'average' game against the Champions and the best LB in the world because........?

i'm not complaining about it. i'm disagreeing with those that are saying he had a particularly good game. because........in my opinion he didnt do anything special.

As the game went on, Chelsea's midfield became increasingly dominant. Tiote and Jonas did okay, but Guthrie and Routledge barely won a single challenge. The back five didn't get much protection.

The game generally showed our limitations at the moment, but the plus side of it was that despite Chelsea's dominance, we always had a chance of nicking a goal.

PS - I'd like to see us make more use of Ranger. He's very raw, but he does look like he can make something happen.

This is true, and in light of this fact we should stop discussing our players and our opinions of them.

Guthrie's passing can be very good at times. I thought his passing in the first half was spot on, his first time passes to switch the play was very good, but then he faded in the second half, maybe due to tiredness, maybe due to the fact that us dropping back too far meant he had to play a game that isn't really his.

I do agree with the sentiment that he doesn't offer enough support to our strikers. His little passes in the center of the pitch are good, but then he needs to make runs forward to support the play because Tiote's already stationed in the center. I don't think it's a fault that can't be corrected, though, especially since he's shown that he's capable of it. I distinctly remember his goal against Portsmouth which rounded off probably his best performance for us - tidy passing, good movement, supporting the strikers with forward runs and actually scoring.

chelsea were pretty poor. plenty of the ball, but were definitely beatable if we didn't make so many mistakes. felt like stevie taylor was a liability but campbell played well. simpson was good and routledge was very good. superb by carroll as well. thought ranger looked bright when he came on. so whilst a win was there for the taking, i'll definitely take a draw. one closer to safety

  carroll, routledge, campbell

 simpson, enrique

:thdn: ameobi, s taylor, krul

Aye, we'll not win the title any time soon

Alex Reid came on the pitch at half time, took a few minutes for me to remember who the hell he was. He was trying to promote some Cage Fighting thing, but everyone booed him for 5 minutes.

Strange, we must be reading varying opinions at different times, but particularly at the beginning of this season I saw lots of people picking hypothetical teams for the new season with a few transfers etc with Guthrie still in the team.

I've just completely run out of patience with the guy, as I said above. For all his technical abilities, hes too slow, takes too long to make his mind up for the league he's in.

Well, I particularly like Guthrie as a player, just think he's struggled this season. I think I've given the impression of it being a decent performance by him, but it could've been much better. Don't think he's exactly deserving of praise when you have an okay game.

We have so many Marmite players on here, its unbelievable. We should have known this would happen on a day when Jonas, Routledge, Guthrie and Taylor all played. We just needed Ranger to start and we'd have a full house.

The bottom line is we got a point and created a few chances. If we'd still lost I don't think we could have asked for much more from everyone today.

Today is the first time we've seen him in his natural position in the PL this season (I think). Just don't think he should be written off just yet. I'm sure Tiote would struggle on the right wing too.

I can't work out if Chelsea were there for the taking or not, we rarely seemed to get out of 1st gear (though neither did they).
