Our thinking would have been he's a fringe England player, we are a step up for him and hence his England chances will increase so he'll go for it. Obviously didn't work - anyone that bothered? Your right it is so frustratng though TBH Bothroyd and Larsson wouldnt have improved our starting XI much at all, if any, so the dissappointment has been offset a little. In the cold light of day we have spent nearly 6 million this window on HBA, more than most. I think the fact we have got to wait for him to play is making people so anxious. Discounting the fact that he shouldn't have to say this at all because he's supposed to have the backing of his employers (and assuming that he's not talking shite as seems usual), it's perhaps no surprise that all we appear to be trying to do is make bargain basement signings. Extremely low risk, and probably just to save on wages by shifting players on more or that won't be/aren't ready to be playing anyway like Xisco and Ranger. James Posted January 14, 2011 Share Posted January 14, 2011 I suspect the problem is this: All players we are interested in for the long term with the exception of Ben Arfa are good players who their clubs won't let go of unless they can get an adequate replacement which isn't likely to happen. We can put in a mega high transfer bid but we'd be better waiting until the summer for a better price. So we look at squad players, who we can get on the cheap. These are the Larssons and the Bothroyds. However because we don't want to blow the wage bill on squad players we are offering less than these players think they can get in the summer. I tend to agree with you, but missing out on two players doesn't mean it's a lost cause. If anything, it might mean we get players who are more hungry and motivated to play for us. Get through the season with what we've got plus Bothroyd then in the summer we can look for a quality partner for Carroll, Ameobi and Bothroyd would be 3rd and 4th strikers with Ranger being allowed out on loan and we can look to offload the other strikers.
