Reports: Talks held with Jay Bothroyd

This....is f***ing dreadful.

Does Pardew not understand the word pace or something? is it a buzz word he picked up in the Casino's? He bangs on about us need pace as a priority this window then tries to buy, bentley, Larsson and Bothroyd.  :idiot2: :harry:

Bothroyd offers nowt different to Shola or Best. Carroll will be gone this summer, dont think they would be stupid enough to sell him this window. Stranger things happen round here though.

Bit of a Kevin Gallagher/Sibbers signing, actually its alot like when we were hoping for Moses and ended up with Best.

Could be a shrewd signing if the price is right, but only if we ship Xisco and Best out then sign another striker with pace.

nothing wrong with Bothroyd's pace.

We have a tonne of mediocre forwards at the club, we don't need to acquire more dead wood. We need quality. This would smell like a token signing to show we did something in the transfer window and backed the new manager.

Seems the strategy for January is a minimal risk one, mostly targetting loans or players out of contract in the immediate summer. Linked with Kris Commons this morning whose contract is also up this summer.

I've never seen him so no idea what to make of it. As Pardew knows where we are short in this squad he will assume full responsibility for signings like these and it should tell us a lot about him as a manager. What I would say however is that we don't need more bodies in the striker department we need quality and pace. If Boothroyd fits either of those criteria then it makes sense.

There are plenty of footballers who are quick. Ranger for starters is pretty quick but never starts. I agree we need some more pace in the team but if there is one position we certainly don't need 'cover' or more mediocrity it's up front.

Right wing we could make a case for this kind of signing, as we only have two recognised wingers plus Barton, and neither of the specialist wingers has any end product. But up front, we need either an obvious improvement or don't bother. We've got about 7 forwards as it is.

Not a great signing but I'd take him if he's in a low wage and signing on fee. What would be even better is if we could do a swap deal and give them the likes of smith and guthrie, I can dream

Now, if they took Smith and gave us Bothroyd in return, that's a deal I could accept. Even if Bothroyd may or may not be a decent player, he's still a better player than Smith by default as he at the very least knows how to kick a ball and not a player.

He's nearly as old as me, are we ditching the Arsenal model and trying to revive our "Dad's Army" team of 1998?  If we're not going to send Ranger and Airey on loan we might as well let them take advantage of injuries and try and develop them here rather than filling that gap with someone comign to the end of the career who also might not come good for us anyway.

Suspect it is a panic buy.

No-one good is usually available in January (although I'd have gone for Yakubu, we need another striker and Bothroyd is the best going. We will then sell Xisco, Lovenkrands and Best in the summer and bring in a couple of decent strikers.

So next season:

Carroll

Van Wolfswinkel?

Carlton Cole?

Shola

Bothroyd

Christ he has had one good season.

This highlights the true NUFC plan regarding transfers it is not about age & potential  but bargains/reduced to clear/freebies/damaged goods.

Sums it up for me

Bothroyd's pretty good man.. er, for a Championship player..

Fairly quick and powerful and very good technique.. From what I've seen he's of the same calibre as Daniel Sturridge, Caicedo or Ish Miller (I know he hasn't played in 2 years but still).. I'd be happy with any of them as a striker option like

He's rubbish and we don't want his type of striker unless we are wanting to play long-ball style.
