We’d win the next 10, O’Brien over the wall then bloody Jim Dobbin. You sure? Seems a big turn out for an opening game v Southend after narrowly escaping relegation to the third tier the season before. I thought it was a wet day for that Southend game too but a long time ago so not sure. Not saying you're wrong of course. It just surprises me. Scoreboard82
After doing some digging it looks like the wet day v Southend i can remember was the previous season which ended in the same score line. 28K at the 92/93 opener though.
ramirez
I’m sure it was wet that day too. Had 10k lock outs in that opening 11 game winning run, apparently. My first season ticket season, £83 in the east stand paddocks for kids.

Someone in a post elsewhere was on about applauding opposition goals, this is an example of that. Yeah, was at and remember that game. Sure Dave Beasant was in goal for them, and as you say, we battered them but he had a worldy that day, and it end our winning run from the start of the season. At least we managed to secure promotion (and maybe also the title) away at Grimsby near the end of the season.

He'd been chased out of Chelsea after dropping a series of howlers and completely costing them games and had a repuation here as being terrible for us. The scorelines didn't reflect the way we were hammering teams (Bristol City apart), with the end of 91/92 and the league-cup ties we'd won 15 straight ties and they were one of the few sides that didn't beat us the previous season where we won comfortably so with all those factors I thought we'd run up a cricket score. Its stuff like that where I learned to fear being confident about games, Edited a Grimsby team onto Sensible Soccer that night to get some payback, helped only a little. Even pictures from that game on the 1993 calender felt uncomfortable. Re the 28k for Southend, wasn't far off average really for under KK the previous season - all gates were between 21-30k, even the Bournemouth cup game under Ossie was 26k. You are probably right but would be very surprised if we "only" had 28k in the ground yet had fans sitting on walls and roofs. I know once momentum gathered and we got that winning run going crowds rose dramatically but I think I remember it being more gradual.
