Did Scholes or someone not miss the start of last season cos of a red card? or is it just reds that count?

I've certainly seen players get suspended before for what they've done in friendlies. Unsure of the exact rules though.

Rules were changed a couple of years ago IIRC.

Unless it's 'exceptional circumstances', yellow/red cards don't carry over into the competitive season.

Anyone know if you get loyalty points for away friendlies?

Newcastle new boys to see early action

By ROSS GREGORY

Published on Friday 8 July 2011 14:45

NEWCASTLE United boss Alan Pardew plans on throwing his new signings straight into the fray when the Magpies open their pre-season campaign at Darlington.

Pardew hopes to take his full first-team squad to take on the Quakers a week today in a bid to ensure they hit the ground running.

That could mean a first outing for new boys Yohan Cabaye, Sylvain Marveaux, Demba Ba and Meihdi Abeid after their arrivals at St James’s Park this summer.

Pardew is determined to ensure Newcastle are in the best shape possible for the season-opener against Arsenal on August 13, and to that end plans on giving as many of his players as possible a run out.

Two who are unlikely to be involved, however, are James Perch and Cheik Tiote, with the game coming too soon for the pair.

Perch is still recovering from a knee injury, while Tiote is being eased back into action slowly after having a longer break than other players, having missed the final three games of last season through suspension.

However, Pardew insists the friendly won’t see a host of reserve team players being given a game.

“This will be an exercise in which we give as many of the squad players as possible a run out,” he said.

“One or two of them will not be up to speed just yet.

“For instance, I don’t think Chieck Tiote or James Perch will be involved.

“It’s certainly not going to be a reserve team game.”

The fixture against Conference side Darlington is the first in a busy pre-season for the Magpies before they jet off to America for a three-game tour.
