Sammy Ameobi released

It is dispiriting yet satisfying at the same time to think that those boys who chased the Ameobis, and subjected them to racial abuse, might now be in the crowd at St James' Park celebrating them. Shola accepts the irony. "But I don't hold a grudge. People back then didn't have the information they have today." I risk the crass observation that it might have been running for his life that made him so quick. "That's my theory, too," he says, with a merry guffaw. "It kept me on my toes."

Shola? So quick? :best:

Brilliant article though.

He was faster then the average racist in Newcastle in the time, guess that was most important for him.

Shola Amobi - faster than a fat skinhead in Doc Martins.

Could put that in his Michael Owen brochure next time we try and get rid of him.

That's why I like Shola and don't mind his presence here at Newcastle because he's worked his way into the team the hard way, from the streets through the academy and from the bench, via many managers and star players ahead of him, all bought at huge cost and wages and he's always put the club first whenever injured. He's also taken huge stick over the years, sometimes justified but not always. I like him because he'sa  good guy, a decent person, someone who you just know appreciates his job and everything that goes with it, someone who would never take the piss. He respects the club and fans and his profession and in many ways his story is what football is all about or should be, he and his story hark back to the days of Wor Jackie. Local lads from nowt working their way through into the first-team and when there actually having an impact. Yeah Shola isn't a great player, but he's done enough (for me anyway) in our shirt, to justify his place at NUFC, be it on the bench or in the first-team if other options are not available for whatever reason. When he does play, over the course of a season, he contributes enough. Far more than the likes of Martins, Owen, Viduka, Car Cort, Duncan Ferguson and other big name, big money, high earning former Toon players ever did. Shola is a role model on and off the pitch really. He's someone who has made the most of a modicrum of talent and he's done it the right way. Its also good to see his much more talented brother seems to share his attitude and good honest down to earth personality too because he'll need it more than his talent to actually make it. Good read and further good press for the club.

Totally agree, and it's great that Sammy has a little bit more ability than Shola and has a chance of achieving even more. I don't think Shola is a brilliant player, but he is a brilliant professional and brilliant lad. Happy to have him associated with the club, even if I hope we don't have to rely on him as a first-choice player.

Shola seems to be a canny lad but should be nowhere near the first team.

Far more than the likes of Martins ever did.

Like when Martins kept us up in 2006-07?

Not saying Martins should be looked at as any kind of toon hero, or even a player we should remember with fondness, but he contributed more to NUFC in that season than Shola has in 11 years, the useless pile of s****.

You could say Shola kept us up in the season before that with his 9 league goals to Martins' 11 league goals the year after. In fact Shola played a huge part in finishing 7th that year with his goals and performances during Roeder's caretaker spell.

7th place or 13th place?

I stand by my point.

Which would you rather lose, Shola's goals from 06 or Martins' from 07?

Like him or not, Martins kept us up while Shola did his usual disappearing act.

Surely it can be argued Shola's goals kept us up the year before? When Souness was sacked we were 15th or something.

Shola had a hip operation that season so missed most of it iirc.

7 of Shola's 9 goals that season came after Souness was sacked, goals that not only helped keep us up but also helped us to 7th.

Martins only scored 3 goals or something in the final 15 league games of that season by the way, hardly keeping us up like...

Martins didn't keep us up that year, the 7 sides below us being even more shitty than we were was what kept us up.

Shola's turboshite man.. He should never have been given a new contract, nor should it have happened last time. Sammy on the other hand looks a good prospect. If we finally get a new striker in in January a loan to a Championship club might be a good idea to further his development.
