LesPaul
You see, now I can't take the thread seriously because I'll suspect every post to be a veiled piss take at Stifler.
Stifler
It doesn't have to be one extreme or another Stifler. Some just aren't blankly ruling it out like you are. Our hat is in the ring = we have a chance. I'm not ruling it out, just I don't think we have a realistic chance of signing him. It would be great if we did, however this could just end up being this years Rooney situation. It's great that the club appears to be going after the likes of Gervinho and Gameiro though and shows that the club do intend to progress.
Guest
What I want to know is, is it a "lack of ambition" by the club if we miss out on the likes of Gervinho & Gameiro because they choose "bigger" clubs, or are we ambitious but just not as good or big as people think? I genuinely feel we're trying to sign these types, whether they'll turn down established European clubs for us is another thing. Reminds me a bit of 2006 actually and the last time we were after a big name to replace our number 9. We were linked with the likes of Kuyt all summer, and in the end we ended up with an Inter reserve paying probably £2-3m more than his worth. Hope this isn't a repeat of that. Ronaldo
Martins was no reserve, like. Just how good is Gervinho, for those who've seen him?
QBG
Martins was no reserve, like. Just how good is Gervinho, for those who've seen him? Aye from what I remember Martins was rated relatively highly.
Guest
He was hardly first choice at Inter though was he?
Ronaldo
The season before we signed him he managed 24 starts and 14 substitute appearances. More first choice than reserve.
Bish
Trying to think of something I'd do if Gervinho actually went to Newcastle. S*** in a bowl and eat it? (Sorry, perhaps a bit too extreme ). Wasn't that what Messi said he would do if Nolan scored 40 goals
Ketsbaia
Whereas I think theres a chance with Gameiro, its unlikely for Gervinho. Would prefer Gameiro too.

Hmm, I get 18 league starts and 10 as sub, exaggerated by the fact they used him in the Champions League more in the earlier stages. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/player/_/id/25785/obafemi-martins?cc=5739 Still it's splitting hairs, still reminds me of that summer still. Shayno
I'm not his biggest fan, he isn't a smart player (positioning, passing decision making) and most of his skill comes from his physical attributes. Very similar to Kalou in that he can be hot and cold and very frustrating to watch. In saying that he has been one of the best players in Ligue 1 this season. Shak
Odds are we won't get him but I'm glad we're trying for players like Gervinho early in the window. Fingers crossed we can convince him.
ponsaelius
What's happening then, we signing him?
Shak
Signed already, we're now discussing the possibility of him being sold to make some profit.

Zero
15m is a price that they won't reject and probably the other clubs don't want to match. We do have a chance, just up to the player's decision.
Guest WisconsinMagpie
I watched one Lille match this year and honestly Sow looked more dangerous to me than Gervinho. But the football addict I blog with has seen Gervinho over the course of a few matches and is high on him with the caveat that his price is steep for someone who still has to prove it outside France. This message board prohibits links to football-porn highlight videos of rumored transfer targets, I believe. But our site doesn't. Just saying. http://bit.ly/l6EdHx
mrmojorisin75
suppose if you get as far as talks with the likes of this lad (and gameiro) best way to sell it is surely to give them a release fee that's an increase in value but not prohibitive? right sign for us, play out of your skin for a season or two and get the attention of CL clubs and you'll get your move - release fee is set 22m having good players for a season or two is surely better than having mediocre ones for four and if they like it so much, they stay, or we get into europe ourselves
Guest DairylandMag
Gervinho is best suited to play as an outside forward in a 4-3-3 in my opinion. I'm not sure how he'd fit in a system other than that. He's not really an out-and-out striker (and he's missed a couple sitters when I've watched Lille) and not really a winger, either. If we're viewing both as strikers, I'd rather have Gameiro. That said, I'd still be happy with Gervinho.

Cajun
I suppose if he has gone away to think about it we have some chance at least. I mean they (him and his agent) could have declined to speak to us or just flatly say thanks but no thanks after discussion s. Straws! Clutch, clutch, clutch.
