Pardew's got his tactics wrong so far. Ba and Shola have been atrocious, Cabaye and Tiote invisible, though Cabaye's shown some neat touches. Doesn't help that the latter two have never played together and that Tiote looks off the pace and sloppy - no surprises there. but it is also cos Cabaye and Tiote both like to sit back. means there's no link between midfield and attack, no one to support Shola and Ba when they get it, or try and work it forward slowly and cohesively. if you play two deep lying midfielders you need that link, in the way of wingers cutting in, full-backs bombing forward, and one of the strikers to drop back, play with his back to goal and be more creative. we don't really have any of that, bar Jonas who has had to help out raylor most game. Full-backs are both awful getting forward and neither Ba or Shola can drop back and link play. need to make it a midfield three with Jonas or Obertan in attacking mid or perhaps get Gosling's energy into the game. tactics so far mean we have no shape to the side, our attacking play solely consists of one of the centre-halves trying to plug that gap between mid and attack by bombing forward - never a good idea. or barton swinging it long to the forwards who either miss the ball or immediately surrender possession. or cabaye playing through balls from 60 yards away that have no chance of reaching their target. toontownman Posted August 13, 2011 Share Posted August 13, 2011 Nobody has played that badly, the fact that it's 0-0 against a good looking Arsenal team is the proof of that. Simpson, Taylor and especially Shola have all played well. The speed of the game is passing Cobaye a little but that's half to be expected, Tiote is off the pace a little as well. These are not criticisms of the players, they are both working very hard to close down space. Delivery has been pathetic with every set piece. Barton and Ameobi have been poor imo. Raylor is doing well considering, unfortunately his best is still shit. Offers Jonas nothing to work from. Everyone else like you said is doing ok, but we have no fluidity, we need to gel as quickly as possible over the coming weeks. Mid is playing way too deep, nothing to link up with in attack. This, especially the bold bit. Which is why I wanted a 4-3-3 to be tried in pre season. In the end we were playing Alan Smith and Peter Lovenkrands in a 4-4-1-1. KaKa Posted August 13, 2011 Share Posted August 13, 2011 The defenders aren't even finding the time and space to get the ball through to either of Cabaye or Tiote succesfully, and therefore the defenders are just lumping it long. I'm sure Wenger is well aware of Cabaye, and it's a tactic that has been implemented on purpose. We ned an extra central midfielder in there to help to not just help with posession, but also to put more pressure on Arsenal's midfield three. Taylor Swift Posted August 13, 2011 Share Posted August 13, 2011 Cabaye has had some nice touches. He hasn't misplaced a pass, iirc. And he looks like he's got some pace as well. He's not lightning quick, but he gets up to full speed pretty fast. He's playing too deep, though, and it seems like him and Tiote aren't on the same wavelength yet (no surprises there, thanks to our shitshow of a preseason). I like him and I think he'll show his quality when we have a team of runners around him, not the-most-immobile-striker-in-the-Premiership aka Mr Ameobi.
