Davide Santon (now retired)

Horrible at fullback today. In the 3-5-2 with less defensive duties looked much better.

He literally goes missing at FB.

Worried if you thought we went 3-5-2, but as a wide player in 4-3-2-1 we switch to he did play well.

Looked to me we went 3-5-2 when Shola went on....

                  Perch-Taylor-Yanga

  Santon                                    Jonas

                      Tiote-Marv-Siss

With Santon at least pushing forward.

Nah, he kept the back four with Perch, Saylor, Mapou and Jonas.

Then had Toite, Sissoko and Santon right out wide right.

Then stuck Cisse and Marv in behind Shola.....as lobsided as you can get.

Great management like :(

I've always defended him on here but his defending recently has been dreadful. Hope this goal gives him a lift.

In the hope it might make him actually clear a ball when it gets to him in the area, he's absymal at being alert and positioned to clear balls.

Hope you're right but his defending is the pits.

Aye this isn't new. Has been horrible defensively all season.

Aye when he was our best defender and one of our best players for the first 6 months he was s**** then too or it just didn't happen and we all imagined it

Apart from the Southampton game( not including today and Haidara was just as to blame) he's been fine since the new signings, he's just the next in line of players to scapegoat.

Funny how Haidara was poor defensively before his injury and against Anzhi but its never mentioned because he's the new boy  ( best wishes to him in his recovery btw)

Maybe we can Balerise him.

yeah I can see him performing better as a winger.

I think he's our best RW right now, given that Marveaux and Sissoko don't fancy the position, but I don't think I can handle Simpson starting for us regularly again (if Debuchy is out).

Shouldn't be quoting me. I've thought he's been poor defensively all season, we all know this.

It's not uncommon for the opposition to sling the ball to their LW area and Santon isn't there. 5 seconds later, he's still not there.

Great finish. Chuffed he got his goal, hopefully it'll restore some of his confidence from the start of the season. He's not Hitler, he's just been in bad form.

Playing him further forward isn't even an option now after we've lost both Debuchy and Haidara.

Amazing how we finally get a proper RB and cover at LB which also helps to get Santon some rest then fates proceeds to screw us up with 2 injuries to our winter signings in one match.

This season... :anguish:

We did , 3 centre halves Perch, Taylor and Mapou with Santon and Jonas pushed into midfield.

Santon was outstanding (relatively speaking of course) defensively in the first three months of the season.

That's because jonas helped him out most of the time.
