Fans being biased is a fact though? So when we here write we are being done by refs you accept that it is quite biased opinion? Yesterday might be done by them, and some other game decisions went in our favour. Like this season already.

There are million mistakes done in a game. ManU (IIRC) a while back scored from a corner that wasnt a corner. Refs fault? Well it is easier to blame him than say we defended the corner poorly.

And for me, mistakes even out cause I have seen us getting ridiculous red cards and many times red cards or penalties not given against us for some reason.

Because every team complains about the ref, except the one who is winning the title. They always think ref was ok.

FWIW Chelsea fans in the Bodega after the game thought it was just a shoulder charge in real time in the ground but all said it was a pen after seeing the VAR view

Just re-watched the pull on Barnes by James - thought first time it was a foul, even more convinced re-watching it.  Absolutely incompetent the refs in our league.

Probably worst aspect of this one was illustrated clearly on the match highlights.

Immediately after it the totally incompetent referee clearly looks to the linesman for guidance, which means he probably thinks it was a foul.

FFS man just make the decision yourself, you're the fucking referee and gave a free kick to the other team which led to their first goal for a similar, but arguably, less clear foul.

And looking at the linesman for guidance ??  FFS most of them can't even make a throw in call anymore until the referee guides THEM.

I agree refs make mistakes. But they are not always in favor of other teams. People say yesterday was ”worst refereeing ever” when couple years ago when won v Arsenal 1-0, there were 2 red cards not shown that should have. But we won so no one cares anymore.

I partially agree but that's a strange example to reference as being an incident nobody cares about.

The 1-0 Newcastle win against Arsenal is universally recognised as one of the most controversial refereeing performances in premier league history in our favour and against Arsenal.

That is despite there being zero legitimate grounds to disallow Gordon's goal. And the two red cards you reference - presumably one relates to Havetz's knee high lunge on longstaff?

On balance, I think Newcastle fans (on here at least) are pretty reasonable at accepting borderline decisions and usually critique the team and manager first before blaming officials.

The hysterical conspiracists only seems to appear when we play well against a good team and deserve to win, but for a bad decision. Compare that to Arsenal's loss at SJP where they were shit, had not shots on goal and deserved to lose.

.com going full on about the incompetence of the ref and VAR in their usual articulate and reasonable style, and they usually veer away from the more controversial stuff in their match reports. That's how bad/corrupt Madley was yesterday.

Was just about to mention that. Their point about on-field refs being shit scared to make a decision, leaving it to VAR and then VAR refusing to get involved resulting in no decision being given is a very salient one. How the fuck did we get to this? Every single week, there’s an absolute shit show of a refereeing performance and you just have to cross your fingers it isn’t our game

This is the main issue now and what makes it all even more galling.

What was lost in the James on Barnes incident for me was the fact the ref had his whistle to his mouth clearly thinking it was a foul. Question then was is it a red? Linesman presumably said he didn't think so, and then VAR spent ages looking at it and concluded the GK covered it.

I agree with them that it's not denial of a goalscoring opportunity. But it was a foul! Where the fuck was our free kick?

If we're going to have VAR we need to allow the ref to actually use it. Blow up for the FK and then just ask VAR to tell him if it's a red or not.

I also think the ref should be sent to the screen more often. The Gordon incident took enough time anyway that the ref could have been at the screen watching the replay. Or word it to the ref "I see where you're coming from but have another look to confirm you're happy".

It's all shit.

Bin VAR.

Train some competent refs.

Massive sporting sanctions for any abuse to the referees both at the highest level and grass roots.

Red cards for diving/feigning injuries that can be applied retroactively if needed.

It was like in an under 9 children's game or something where one side was so much better and took a two goal lead so feeling sorry for the other team the referee decided to give them every decision to even things up and stop them crying.

Except it wasn't an under 9's game it was the Premier League.

Haven’t watched the clips back but from where I was standing, Ramsey’s challenge on Palmer should never have been given as a free kick for their goal. The Gordon penalty incident is not even up for debate. Aside from that the Barnes pull back should have been given and a ton of other mistakes make it the worst full 90mins refereeing performance I can remember. Needs to be shot with shit and told where the fucking door is

This is where we need to stop being such a soft touch here and demand an explanation from that bald cunt Webb. Same as the likes of Chelsea would have done had this been the other way around. Put a bit of pressure on the useless bastards. Between the referee, linesman (who had a perfect view) and VAR to still come to the incorrect decision is inexcusable. Worse still their statement (which they released during the match!)  doesn't actually marry up with what happened.

While they’re at it, they can give the reasoning for Mr Brobbey doing the same for the mackems last weekend

I'll give you a simple reason why Brobbey and Garnacho are not sent off.

Brobbey on Miley = Miley jumped up immediately and started to run back to defend.

Garnacho on Ramsey = Ramsey got back up after a second or so.

Now compare them with fouls on Van Dick...

Gordon on Van Dick = Van Dick follows the referee around and goes onto the floor rolling around in pain at a minimum of four times.

Xavi on Van Dick = Van Dick gets fouled then looks at Xavi before going down and laying face down as if he'd been shot.

Honest play from Miley and Ramsey give an easy out to VAR as it appears this serious or aggressive foul play has caused no injuries and therefore can't be as bad as they thought.

Van Dick has dies several times over two tackles and only just manages to get back up with devine assistance.

If Gordon, Barnes, Elanga, Bruno, Sandro are on the end of Brobbey or Garnacho fouls both would've been sent off after VAR.

Honest players eh

A lot of this is subjective and based on peoples' experience and inherent biases.

Most people I know think there should have been a penalty yesterday, but one of the group I met post-match was having none of it. He's in his 70s and I'm assuming to an extent he remembers the days you could rugby tackle a keeper into the net and claim a goal, but whatever his particular biases are they aren't due to his allegiance, he's been going home and away to pretty much every game for over 50 years and the only time I remember him missing a match was the day after his wife died.

Clearly I think he's wrong in this instance, but his opinion is still valid as it's made in good faith.

No I dont keep. But I know that we have gotten ridiculous decisions in our favor, and that is why I choose not to whine when we dont get some call.

And like I said: every group of fans think refs are shit and corrupt. But it is never in their favour. Seems impossible to me.

I think Gordon on VVD was with a much greater force. Garnacho and Xavi were not so dangerous, but they were high.

with Brobbey the thing is he was on a yellow already IIRC. If ref blows that he is off. I think he just bottled it.

That's mental man. Who says to their mates in the pub after a game "you know what, that's definitely a pen on Gordon but do you remember the decision we got away with 2 years ago? It's all fair enough then isn't it. All equals itself out"

Complaining about refereeing decisions is what football is all about and always will be. If you just watch the 90+ minutes and forget about everything afterwards then what's the point.

Gordon goal was ok. Havertz almost kicked Longstaff to half and Bruno elbowed Jorginho from behind. EPL panel later stated goal was ok but 2 reds were not given. That is really poor refereeing. Other was potentially career-ending tackle.

I was being a bit tongue in cheek there about the rugby tackle in fairness

But although I think he's wrong,my point was it isn't impossible to have an honest belief that the incident is a fair shoulder to shoulder challenge.

For VAR, we've sacrificed the flow of the game at the alter of accuracy when it doesn't matter how many cameras you put on an incident, there will always be an element of subjectivity and inconsistency about it all.

Yep- there's a reason Liverpool FC debase themselves and throw away their dignity when they're on the wrong end of these calls. They know fine well if they kick up enough of a fuss they will reap the benefits on the pitch.

I say. Because I know that Burn/ Schär etc moment is right around the corner.

I like to talk about football with my mates and how good NUFC was yesterday.

What is the point of complaining about referees? It doesnt get you anywhere. But it being ”what football is all about” really is mental take. I prefer through balls by Bruno, thunderbastards from Schär, last ditch tackles from Burn etc. Usually no need to mention ref a single time. You remember bad decisions but not the game itself?

Trust me, PL has pretty good refs in global perspective

It shouldn't be about the refs, but unfortunately it is, I love all those things you mentioned and they should have got us the win and would have were it not for an absolutely insipid display by Madley, that's when it becomes about the ref because we were good enough to win and should have all things being equal.

It's all part if it. The good and the bad man. Telling people not to moan because you don't is nonsense. Just don't read it and live in your own bubble where refs are great and everything evens itself out over a season. It really doesn't like.
