The penalty Chelsea got last night was for the same thing they did against us, with far less force.

They aren’t even pretending anymore.

wasnt a shoulder though - it was a push,

thats what they'll say.

We only watched the first half round my sister’s - by the time we got home the game was done and my Villa wife couldn’t face it.

Remember that Saka foul first half? The one where Villa are about to break and he just kicks the guy? Everyone else in the entire league gets a yellow for that except a Liverpool player at Anfield. (And Joelinton at St James’s Park :bluestar:)

The panel also voted the VAR Peter Bankes was correct not to advise that Newcastle should be given a spot-kick in their match against Chelsea on 20 December.

Head coach Eddie Howe said the Magpies were refused a "stonewall" penalty when Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah barged Anthony Gordon to the ground. Newcastle led 2-1 at the time, and the game finished 2-2. The club said they would be "seeking clarification" about the decision.

The panel felt referee Andy Madley should have awarded a spot-kick (3-2), but it didn't reach the threshold for a VAR intervention (3-2).Those in favour of a penalty said "Chalobah makes no challenge for the ball and makes reckless shoulder, hip and leg contact".But those against believed it was "robust shoulder-to-shoulder contact with the ball in playing distance".

Leave big Joe out of this, his challenges can are strong but always fair.

Not a foul on Martinez, for me. Watched it over and over. Surprised it wasn’t given, mind. They usually are.

Didn’t the ref have a word with Arteta about it at one point early in the first half? Then he just carried on immediately.

It’s so frustrating. It’s a clear rule and there’s a fucking great big white line painted on the floor. Warn him once, then book him, then send him off. It’s not complicated. Do the same for everyone.

He does it every game.

Yup, which is why you start actually policing it. Until you do he will continue to do so. Like Saka with the foul stopping the break. There’s no incentive to stop, so they won’t, and there’s a genuine advantage being gained.

So you can knock someone down as long as the ball is within playing distance? And this is a quote they’ve actually thought long and hard about before releasing publicly?

Hang on, didn’t VAR at the time say that Chalobah was shielding the ball? They’re now saying it was a shoulder charge instead and, 3 of the panel saying it didn’t meet the threshold of a clear and obvious error?

Dear me, surely the first question is where was first contact, thigh or shoulder and that’s it, debate over, it’s a penalty?

Embarrassing stuff.

It does my fucking head in how he runs around willy nilly literally every game. I'd love to hear why he's never ever punished for it.

If you're in favour of VAR on offsides you are anti-football.

"But there's got to be a line somewhere :fwap:" Nah, there actually doesn't.

Applying video game standards to real life. Absolutely fucking miserable.

Only issue is that it's not quicker. There does have to be a line somewhere and it is a binary thing similar to goalline technology. Get it as quick as that and that can be ticked off as problem solved

Just seen Wirtz equaliser against Fulham and it's 100% offside if you look at the line on the grass. Now I've heardthere’s a 5cm tolerance level or benefit of the doubt which I've never heard of before until now thought it was no tolerance. Of course it's Liverpool who benefits 🙄

Just watching this on Sky now, even Carragher is saying it’s off. VAR is fucking hopeless.

What the fuck is that Wirtz decision?

He’s further offside than Wissa was.

My big issue with VAR and offsides is the still they used to determine Wissa was offside was after the ball had already been played, the ball is clearly moving through the air rather than when contact with the ball is first made.

That fraction of a second could make all the difference. They’ll never be able to perfect that so we’re measuring people’s toe hairs being offside (unless you’re Liverpool and we apply a new tolerance) yet we can’t even get the right frame to measure.
