Guest MalcolmW
Red Bull Salzburg have been knocked out of the Champions' League in the Second Qualifying Round. They were one of only 4 clubs entering at that stage with better coefficients than Newcastle. If they had been knocked out in the THIRD Round they would have transferred to the EuropaLeague, but now they are out of European competitions for the season. They lost the first leg 1-0 away to Dudelange of Luxemburg and last night won 4-3 at home, going out on away goals. This significantly increases Newcastle's chances of being seeded come the draw for the Fourth Round, with all that that implies.

Guest MalcolmW
Dinamo Zagreb, who are ranked higher than we'll be, looking like they'll get knocked out too. Dinamo Zagreb squeezed through by 1 goal. Newcastle would need to drop a net 6 places in the seeding list to become unseeded for the draw. There are 9 clubs who would come in above Newcastle if they are knocked out of the Champions League in QR3. So long as less than 6 do so then seeding is definite. These 9 are: Basel, Anderlecht, Celtic, BATE Borisov, Dinamo Zagreb, Cluj, Dinamo Kiev, Panathinaikos and Fenerbahce. (The result of Brugge v Kobenhavn is immaterial as they both have a higher seeding coefficient than NUFC.) But even if all 9 of the above lose, defeat for any 4 of these clubs in the Europa League QR3 will guarantee seeding: Internazionale, Liverpool, Olympique Marseille, Athletic Bilbao, Hannover, Steaua Bucharest and Heerenveen.
