7 days before the start of the season last year:

Were in the middle of getting Barton f***ed off on a free to the amusement of everyone

Enrique had left after Pardew had said he wanted to keep him

Ashley appeared to have spent 3 months getting knocked back by about 5 different clubs in his bid to get Carroll's replacement, who unbelievably still hadn't been replaced after leaving in January. We'd still not spent any of the £35m

We had the seemingly nightmarish prospect of Taylor at left back v Gervinho on first day of season

We had Tiote stuck in Ghana after some f*** up with passports.

I seem to recall Ben Arfa got a knock in pre season - putting his comeback even further back.

We were tipped for relegation in some quarters

Pardew was starting to look like a complete tit by guaranteeing we'd have 'two players over the line' by the start of the season and then nothing happening.

We are looking pretty good this year imo.

Completely ignores the great July we had in the transfer window like

at the end of the season many said it would be a good window if we kept our majot players. also they appear so far to be a lot weaker than last season.

hence not needing one this year :crazy2:

in particular after acquiring santon and cisse in the interim

Well we need one, we do need 3 players to come in before the end of the window and don't think anyone will deny that but if anyone thinks we are worse prepared for this season than last one then they are insane.

He referred to a great July you bell

I know that, but how that has any relation to being more prepared for last season than this i have no idea.

We did'nt need to have a great July this time as you quite rightly said, all i said is that we still needed to buy players and i'm pretty sure we still will.

Point is, great July or not we are much better prepared this season than last.

Really don't understand where all this pessimism is coming from tbh, we still have the team that finished 5th plus the return of injury to key players and talented kids who are maturing.

There's plenty to be positive about, beginning of last season we couldn't really say that.

sunday sun -

NEWCASTLE United could go into next Saturday’s Premier League opener against Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park without FOUR key players.

Strikers Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba are carrying knocks and didn’t even make yesterday’s trip to Wales for their side’s final pre-season match against Cardiff City, who won 4-1 on a bad day for the Magpies.

Cheick Tiote is almost certainly out after the midfielder picked up a calf strain in the second-half, while captain Fabricio Coloccini was rated doubtful after taking a kick in the game. He only lasted 45 minutes in the Welsh capital.

Toon boss Alan Pardew was hopeful Cisse and Ba would be OK, but with Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa, neither of whom were in yesterday’s squad, still at least a week behind in their pre-season preparations, Newcastle could be far from at full strength for Spurs and also the Europa League first-leg match in Athens the following week against Atromitos.

Pardew said: “We will have to monitor Cheick. We are sweating on him for next Saturday, if I’m honest.

“Colo has a knock and right now I’m not sure how that is. He is due to meet up with the Argentina national team after the weekend and we are going to have him assessed to see if he can go.

“Demba got a slight knock on Friday, as did Papiss. We hope and think both will be OK.”
