Going by Pardew's logic, there's more chance of us scoring 2 goals during 70-90 mins than there is,

Compared to scoring 2 goals during a full 0-90 mins.

Strange man.

ridiculous, he stated theres more chance of the opponents scoring in that 70 mins if you attack them, simple fact, and in this scenario that would have ended the game by half time. People are just making things up.

This.

Re your point of if HBA had scored that shot-

Some of us here have been saying for a while that we can't keep-on relying on individual brilliance to get us out of jail. Last night showed exactly why.

And yet you were satisfied enough?

As HTT said, some of those that are making these pathetic excuses deserve the s*** that have been thrown at their faces this season.

Feel very sorry for the likes of yourself and HTT that you couldn't enjoy a night and be proud of the team after that tbh. If you can't put an agenda against a manager aside after a tie where we came across a better and more experienced European team then I pity you.

Proud of a performance where for 45 minutes we sat back and did pretty much f*** all? A performance that saw us put in a good attacking display for about 10 minutes only?  Seriously, is this how far we have fallen in terms of expectations? If you feel proud for last night and our showing in this competition this season you're easily pleased.

Another who reads that as "proud of the performance". Nice one.

What do you make of Harper's comment about Pardew playing Bigi because he was concerned about their LB? Couldn't we have exploited their weakness instead?

We could have approached the game in many many different ways last night. To try and contain and stifle the opposition who were so relaxed and comfortable for 70 minutes and then HOPE to nick two goals in a 20 minute all or nothing display, however, was the worst possible approach.

We approached the game in the way Benfica initially did. Their whole game plan was to contain us and to play out the match hoping to nick an away goal. They set up that way because they thought we would go for it, to try and get some goals back.

They realised after 10 minutes, however, that we were not going to play like that and started to basically take the p*ss upon learning that we really were going to try to knock them out in a 20 minute spell.

It was embarrassing and laughable. Honestly, I would destroy Pardew in a tactical battle as would half of this forum. The man is a pseudo coach who has read a few books on Mourinho and thinks he can do the opposition in 20 minutes. What a bell end

The sight of Cabaye time and time again, on his own box, at home, in a game where we needed to win 2-0 to progress, feeding the ball to Williamson who thens move into midfield to play the ball out, sums Pardew up and this whole tie. The man is absolutely clueless.

To put it in simple terms, our manager thinks the best use of Cabaye is to sit on top of our own penalty area to give the ball to Williamson, who he must feel offers more on the ball than the Frenchman. Williamson played more advanced of Cabaye and played more forward balls in the first 45 minutes.

Even if that wasn't something Pardew instructed, the fact he allowed it to go on says it all.

Defend that, go on!

well said

and for those Pardew apologist.  Take a look at yourself before he came here and now that he's been here.

Ask yourself this question, do you ever see Alan Pardew managing a bigger club than nufc in the future?

be honest, and that tells you everything.

I said straight after the game I thought the Bigirimana selection was baffling. Check the Bigi thread.

I also didn't realise at the time though that Marveaux wasn't fully fit. Who was the other viable option, Perch? That would have went down well with the people saying we should have attacked them from the off. Shola? Yeah right, imagine the reaction on here had he picked him up front in a 4-4-2 or Cisse on the right.

What bigger clubs than us did Keegan go on to manage after he left us? (both spells) The one bigger job he got, he failed.

As I said a week or two ago, I don't see what the issue is with people being prepared to offer a manager who had us within touching distance of a top 4 spot, and close to a European Semi-Final, a bit longer to put things right.

Why is it so difficult to believe we could have been a little more attacking without it being reckless in the first hour or so.

The narrow minded thinking here is mental.

No-one will reply to that Bimpy because its sensible. It's easier to rubbish the grander stuff like 'Pardew's shit and this gameplan was just the same stuff we always get'. I totally believe it though.

You could say that he made 2 mistakes here-

1. By selecting a player, who hasn't started in 2 or 3 months, out-of-position.

2. By selecting him for the wrong reasons. i,e - to stop their LB threat.

And, for the record, I stopped trusting Pardew's claims about our injuries a long time ago. Time and time again he's contradicted himself, not least with HBA.

No-one wants us to attack attack attack all game. We want a balanced team who can pass the ball around, keep pressure on the opposition and create chances effectively for 90 minutes. This is always a far far better plan than getting 9 men behind the ball and praying.

Incidentally though, maybe Pardew's plan wasn't all that bad, because in his tenure we've shown absolutely no signs of being able to pass the ball around as a team.

His previous record definitely means something. It's ludicrous to suggest otherwise, absolutely ludicrous. The comparison to Keegan is laughable.

I don't think it's unfair to use him as an example when someone's just asked what bigger clubs could he get in the future tbh.

And his previous record is not half as bad as some make out. Did well at Reading, took West Ham to within a kick of a major trophy, Charlton & Southampton he was a bit of a let down, but he was harshly sacked at Southampton after a win, draw and a defeat in the first 3 games and didn't get on with their owner.

Do you think they would have lasted until the 71st minute without conceding, had we attacked them from the off?

Look, we needed 2 goals and our manager in his f***ed up wisdom decided that the best way to score two goals and thus win us the tie was not in the first 70 minutes but the final 20 which is absurd whatever way you look at it. The longer the game wore on at 0-0 the higher the likelyhood of a Benfica result as it showed.

We did not have to go all out attack by the way to get back into the tie. Like I said there was several approaches to the game available to us and our manager happened to choose the most backward and counter productive one.

His single method to being 2-0 down/needing 2 goals was to write off a whole 70 minutes for some f***ed up deluded and quite frankly sheer f***ing mind boggling belief that 20 minutes would do it. Not even in the world of the twighlight zone does that make any f***ing sense!

By the way, in the final segments of the match, we were more gung ho than we have ever been in this competition and in that spell, a very dodgy Benfica back line were f***ing shiting themselves whenever we got on the ball.

Pardew does not have any belief or trust in his players nor the skills and nous to get them playing to any kind of game plan, not even his favoured long ball cautious s*** doesn't f***ing work.

He should refund every single fan that went last night their money because before a ball was even kicked his f***ed up plan meant we were never ever going to progress.

And can one of his fanboys tell me the benefit in playing Cabaye so deep, to the f***ing point where he is actually feeding the ball to Williamson to do the job he is actually in the team or should be to do? Please, because I'm struggling.

Oh I'm sorry I misread the post you quoted. Fair enough his record wasn't the worst, it is a good indicator of how good he is at his job though, just like everyone else.

One of the unavoidable consequences of Pardew's "gameplan" yesterday was to keep the crowd quiet for 70 minutes. Can you believe that, a manager playing at home, requiring a 2 goal win and he knows his "tactics" will keep his own crowd quiet? And he tells the opposition, in several interviews, exactly what he hopes to do, thus allowing them to ease themselves into the game with minimal pressure. Fucking unbelievable!

We'll never know now, but I would much rather he had sensibly attacked the game, got the crowd going and put their defence on the back foot from the off. They did look very shaky when we did attack with any intent. Shame we had to wait 40 minutes for that to happen.

I guarantee if it was Souness in the dugout and not Pardew, there would have been hell on this morning. Unlike Pardew though, at least Souness went for it in cup competitions.

I don't want to harp back to the KK days or the Sir Bobby days, but can you imagine those two being so limp wristed?

KK would have went all out attack, Sir Bobby less so. Either way we would have stood a far better chance of progressing under those two in a similar situation than under Pardew whose way of thinking I simply cannot get around.

If ever a manger cost a side, last night was that.

To be honest, one of the only half decent sides we played against under Keegan, we went 3-0 up and whether it was the players or himself, we were naive and didn't see the 90 minutes out which cost us.

It was our first season back in europe and he was inexperienced manager that that level.

He had plenty of European experience though. I'm sure he'd have picked up something from his time at Liverpool & Hamburg as a player as to how to handle those situations.
