Newcastle United won't panic despite Remy blow

by Lee Ryder, Evening ChronicleJan 15 2013Comments (11)

NEWCASTLE United will not panic in the remaining days of the January transfer window after Queens Park Rangers hijacked their bid for Marseille ace Loic Remy.

Newcastle were today looking at alternatives as it looked like they had been blown out of the water by a late bid from the Londoners.

The French media claimed last night that Newcastle were “still in the race” to get Remy, but he had also been booked in for his medical at QPR.

The 26-year-old had been due on Tyneside yesterday to complete the formalities of his move from Ligue 1.

But after flying to London first, QPR had a second bite of the cherry to sign the forward.

And after offering the player £85,000 per week and a minimum-fee release clause in the event of Harry Redknapp’s side being relegated, Remy was set to tie the deal up this morning.

It leaves Newcastle in a tricky situation for the rest of the window yet they were assessing their other options today as they were not prepared to match QPR’s huge wage offer for a player that has started just two Ligue 1 games this season and had injury problems.

United were reeling today after seeing their £8.3m offer accepted only for QPR to pounce at the death.

As reported last week in the Chronicle, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang remains a target but prising him away from St Etienne before the end of the season will be the challenge for the Magpies.

United have been offered Swansea City striker Danny Graham already in the window and while the Gateshead lad would be a popular choice because of his Tyneside roots, he does not fit into the club’s blueprint of signing younger players at the age of 27.

Meanwhile United must also resolve the situation surrounding Fabricio Coloccini.

The Argentinian trained as normal yesterday but is due to sit down with Toon top brass this week.

United have the task of trying to persuade him that his future can be on Tyneside and hope they can persuade him to remain at St James’ Park until at least the end of the season.

Ah right, I assumed his ability to spend on QPR was pretty much unlimited. If he needs a return any time soon he's running a massive risk.

Nope he's worth around 500m. That's a 1/3 of Ashley's worth. Only way a club like QPR can sustain 80k p/w for players is Champions League. Fernandes expected midtable this season. There's no way he can support 20m losses year on year.

Latest net worth estimated at USD 400 million.  So near £250 million is his net worth.

Abumingmong says he won't leave this window and will probably go in the summer.

There's our excuse.

You're acting like a spoilt little kid, man.

How so, the sarcy comment?

Aye, there's been a few recently, mate. I can understand the frustration, but (cringe) you're better than that.

Still feel gutted about this today. You just know it was Remy or bust.

Yep. Haven't got a clue as to who we're going to go in for now. Worrying.

Even worse we've lost him to a relegation rival. This just might seal our relegation. Can't see who else we're gonna get.

There's also the humiliation of losing out to one of the shittiest no mark clubs for such a talented player too.

They want to build a new stadium and they will get a lot of corporate sponsors from Asia. Fernandes is a smart guy. He's not a guy who lucked or was born into money. He has business sense. He's investing now and hopes that it'll pay off later. The sustainability of the club will depend on their revenue but he already has a plan for increasing their revenue. That's much more than Portsmouth ever had. Whether he's successful is another matter but they're certainly not a Portsmouth who had owners who spent beyond their capabilities.

Yes they are.

Portsmouth had a new stadium in the pipeline.

Portsmouth actively were looking for extra sponsors and thought buying success now would buy them guaranteed future which was completely wrong.

They still went he same way as Leeds.

Which QPR will do when they get relegated.

Fernandez is way smarter than anyone who was ever connected to Pompey.

History is littered with the still smouldering corpses of clever, rich men who went into football club ownership and still got burned.

Fernandes has more brains than the whole of our management put together. More so he is an inspirational character like a Branson.

He really isn't.

You know fuk all about him. He was one of the brains at Aol and left when he saw the writing on the wall. He started Air Asia from scratch in one room with no airline licence. If qpr survive in the PL a couple of season they will be a force to be reckoned with.

By this logic, we have Ashley, who also built a massive empire from very little. So because he is the 15th wealthiest in the UK, he must know what he is doing running a football club, right?

Fernandes corporate nous and structure is on another planet to Mashley..That is abundantly clear to anyone who looks at it for 2 mins. Football isn't an exact science but I know who I'd rather own our club. Mashley is a poor communicator - Fernandes by all accounts is loved top to bottom in his companies and ventures. He's an economist and astute model builder for business longevity and structural financial development. It's like comparing a monkey with a typwriter and an IBM.

Tbf Ashley's worth more than Fernandes. on that basis alone, he's a better businessman.

Yeah but one of them qenuinely is excited about being in football. I wonder who?

But only one of them was excited enough about owning Newcastle football club. There is the problem.

Yeah, I'm feeling quite bitter about a club such as QPR suddenly being able to hurl money around and sign players they really wouldn't or shouldn't be able to get. Probably petty, but yeah, I am

My only worry is how quickly we can get our next target in.

We can't worry too much about Remy. It was always going to be a tough one. He's a pretty highly though of player, and so it was always going to be a battle with someone to land him. It's not like Ben Arfa where no one wanted him because of perceived baggage, and it's not like Cabaye who many weren't as aware of. Redknapp has also been chasing Remy since he was at Tottenham, so no surprise he pulled out all the stops.

I think with our current setup, we'll always do better landing the talented players that are not quite as high profile yet, unless it's a Ben Arfa type, who has been in trouble. Marseille is a pretty big club in France, and it's always going to be a tougher sell to players coming from these type of clubs, they'll already feel like stars, and will want the big money, glamour etc.

Think we'll likely always be better off sealing deals for the likes of Maiga (though we opted out in the end!) who was coming from Socheaux, or even Cisse who was coming from a less renowned club in Germany.

Hopefully we can have success with Aubameyang for this sort of reason. Going after Gomis from Lyon, would be another move that would worry me, as his profile is quite a bit higher at the moment, and there will be other eyes fixed on him.

Man ... hope some positive news on other players comes soon. Feel deflated.

Exactly - he'll have spent his entire net worth within a year or two at this rate.  Can't see them getting much debt from banks.  It is a disaster waiting to happen.

One of the Mittals owns a third of QPR. Nuff said about where their money will be coming from.

Not that simple, though, having an owner with loads of money doesn't mean that owner is going to plough it in ad infinitum.

The Mittals who as recently as October 2012 were reviewing their position at QPR and were only persuaded to stay on by a desperate Fernandes.  Yeah... I'm sure they'll keep spending.

He was around before Fenandes though, iirc and QPR were not spending big bucks then. Only when this guy came along a couple of years ago did their spending reach ridiculous levels. They've not the infrastructure or support base to sustain this level of spending for long.

Th sooner they fuck off back to obscurity the better.

QPR aren't idiots. Idiots are those who haven't seen the tv money from next year onwards. There is massive inflation in the market. We will make a healthy profit next year because the tv money will be huge. That is what is at stake. The shittest players will be on 30k/pw in no time because the moolah is flowing into the league. It would be folly for QPR not to try their hardest to stay in the league then regroup in the summer.

Let's say his release clause is 5m. They're basically risking 3.3m plus his wages for the next five months. And the possible returns? Well, premiership money compared to championship money, which by next year will be close to 60m. An idiot would be someone unwilling to risk a few million.

If we're confident we can stay up when our team is fully fit then that's one thing, if we're not confident then not signing Remy would be the most classic example of being penny wise, pound foolish. The money from next year onwards is too important to try to save a million here or there.
