themanupstairs
Theres no law against playing two CB's who aren't absolute tanks, MYM was strong and athletic enough, they could and should have had a chance to play more together. Playing 2 ball playing CBs both on the small side has never worked in the PL. It never will, either. PL strikers are superathletes in 2015. Partnering Mapou with a bloke who gets outmuscled and out jumped by Shane Long would never have brought out the best in him. If you picked out maybe a dozen of the best CB partnerships in the PL, I couldn't think of one like that Colo/MYM partnership MYM came in at a time when the future of Coloccini at the club was uncertain. If we had lost Coloccini and replaced him directly with MYM, none of this would be an issue now.

But then we don't buy players to fill positions we are short, we buy them looking for profit potential.
The College Dropout
Our transfer policy is "buy centre-back with good re-sale potential". It doesn't matter about their style or strengths. MYM was a flop for us and we got our money back. In a twisted way, it proves the model works (for Ashley). We could flog Sissoko tomorrow for 5x what we paid (if it was 2m). Potentially up to 10x. Not to mention the long-term issue of grooming Mapou as Colo's successor. Really don't understand why this is so hard for people to grasp!!!
ilikenewcastle
Good luck to the lad, but he wasn't good for us and even he admits he wasn't suited to the Premier League. Probably gets an easy ride because a lot blame Pardew for literally everything that's gone wrong at the club since 2012.

The College Dropout
MYM was a flop for us Based on what? Based on his time here being a failure. He didn't succeed here. It wasn't his fault largely but thems the facts. Diego Forlan flopped at Man Utd, still a top player.

Pardew is to blame for 100% of the negative things at the club - except about 10% of the playing staff consisting of the likes a Tiote & Gouffran. Deuce
MYM would be a dramatic improvement on every other CB we have. It's 100% Alan's fault that he wasn't played every single week and, as an extension of that, it's Alan's fault that he was unceremoniously shipped off. Meanwhile, we persist with the likes of Mike Williamson, Steven Taylor, Paul Dummett and an over-the-hill Fabricio Coloccini. Dunno what's so fucking difficult about this concept. Because Mapou generally didn't play well for us? Not saying I approve of the other defenders and he should still be here (because having 2 CBs is a bit silly). Ronaldo
MYM didn't play well for us. He looked a liability too often. I in no way think this is a reflection of his quality or potential, both of which are considerable.
Guest firetotheworks
Whether you think he played well or not (personally I thought he played well enough to start and get better) he was either not played or played at right back a lot of the time. People expect players to come in and just play as they should as if it's Fifa or something, you give players time, especially when they're young, have a very good reputation and the alternatives are shit. TRon
MYM didn't play (that) well for us for the same reason Coloccini has struggled in the past. Neither of them are physically suited to perform the John Terry role. Both would be superb alongside someone like John Terry IMO.

Ronaldo
I'd forgotten being asked to mark the likes of Shane Long constitutes the John Terry role. Coloccini has struggled because he was a poor athlete to begin with and this has gotten worse to the point of farcicality. Mapou's mitigating circumstances are vast. Coloccini has struggled because he was a poor athlete to begin with and this has gotten worse to the point of farcicality. Mapou's mitigating circumstances are vast. Long is a great athlete who runs nearly constantly, tbf. It's maybe his only positive attribute. You are right in general, though. Of the CBs at the club now, Taylor is the only one who even approaches the requisite level of physicality and athleticism we should look for in that position, and he is constantly injured and also an idiot. Williamson is weak physically and in the air for his size (Look what Moses did to him). Dummett needs to forget leftback and spend a year adapting to position physically and mentally. It has been a problem for quite a while. Bassong should have stayed at the club.
Guest firetotheworks
I remember when we made these signings, there was a French reporter going through our signings and in hindsight got them all spot on, stuff about Debuchy being a very athletic right back that loved to get forward and getting involved in attacks and that he was a threat from set pieces (lol), that Sissoko is a powerful runner whose form had dropped a bit, that Gouffran could go either way but could be a decent back up striker, it was always quite cautious about his opinion though, but described Yanga Mbiwa as 'the real deal' and said about how there was surprise in France that he was coming here and not somewhere like Arsenal. He then went through his achievements already and said that he would be brilliant. It just goes to show, like.

This is what I said previously as well, Williamson is weak in the air for his size, and Taylor prefers to hang back and defend deep rather than attack the big strikers. Collocini and MYM are competent in the air, but against a genuine aerial threat they will not be up to it for 90 mins. Shane Long has a very good leap and with a running start it wasn't that much of a surprise he won that tussle.
ben-nufc
To suggest Mbiwa has been any worse than any of the other CB's we've had whilst he's been here is daft IMO. Most of the mistakes he was making could have been coached out of him unlike those of Willo and Colo. Really thought that over time we'd have a fantastic defender on our hands. Not good enough technically to get away with being the size he is now.
