Froggy
85 goals for Rooney to match Shearers record, and Decky will owe me £100 from a bet made years and years ago. It's going to be tight.

How old is he? Will be 29 next month. 20-odd league goals every season until he's 33. Going to be close, but don't think he'll quite get there. Injuries, a decline in pace and decreased number of games at that age will count against him.

Injuries, a decline in pace and decreased number of games at that age will count against him. I think it's more likely that he doesn't do it, but it'll still be very close. He'll probably have a 20+ season this year. If he had played as a striker every year for us it would only be a matter of time.

Village Idiot
Didn't know that, but Bravo (our GK) gives out his shirt to charity every time he keeps a clean sheet. If more "A-list" footballers did things like that, that's a lot of money that could be raised, without any effort from their part.

Just reminds you how amazing Shearer was. Despite pretty much having to re-invent himself as a player for a sizeable chunk of his career, he still got that many goals, man. We do something similar when we score 2 or more goals, we get 50% off at Papa John's.
TaylorJ_01
In all fairness - given the wages of footballers - it's incredibly easy for them to appear saintly. When a footballer gives a homeless guy £100 it's seen as the most god-like charitable thing ever while, in reality, it's the equivalent of me donating about 3 pence. Village Idiot
Not to the homeless guy obviously Yeah, I honestly don't care if footballers actually give a shit or they just do it for PR, or whether their donations are just pocket change for them. If it helps people in need, that's all I care about.
TaylorJ_01
From a PR angle I'm amazed more don't do it.
Village Idiot
They do it a lot in Spain - and we are continuously reminded of it. Casillas has his own charity, so does Messi... A lot of clubs have their own charitable organizations, not only Barça and Madrid. There's possibly a tax angle to it, I guess.
ponsaelius
Loads might do it without publicizing it? Would go against the mantra that all footballers are scum though.

Neil
The impression I get is a lot of footballers do a lot of things for charity which don't get reported. Doesn't justify the disgusting wages they get but there are probably more decent people than cunts.
Village Idiot
Also, regarding the PR bit, it goes both ways. It raises awareness when somebody famous is seen supporting a given cause. There was this case when some Real Madrid players visited a lad with leukemia (even misguided souls are still capable of kindness) tweeted/instagramed about it, went viral, and caused a spike in bone marrow donations.
