Gerrard was great at Rangers really, done all that could be asked of him, it wasn’t that mad he got the Villa job and now he in the arse end of football, he doesn’t really match the profile of the other two, he's not really failed that much

He won a two horse race with Rangers when Celtic where having one of their bi-decadely wobbles. Think Emery's achievements at Villa show how poor he was, and the fact that he's on the verge of being sacked by a Saudi team despite having some of the leagues best players.

If his name wasn't Gerrard he wouldn't have had a look in

Nah, that well undersells what he actually done with Rangers to be honest.

They went from a team being knocked out European qualifiers by Progress Neiderkorn, finishing third in the league and drawing 5-5 with Hibs to drawing away to Vilareal in the space of months.

He put in place a team that would make a European Final on a shoestring budget and the league he won was as a consequence of what Rangers done that season as much as Celtic.

His work with them was excellent.

The Villa thing is evidence of how good a manager Emery is as much as it is the work of Gerrard, the Saudi thing, managers fail in jobs now and then, if they were all constantly perfect, none of them would ever be sacked, just about every manager makes an arse of it at some stage, more so when they are pretty early in their career

From what I've read it's fair to say a great deal of the success Gerrard had with Rangers was due to the work of Michael Beale (who was responsible for much of (all?) of the actual coaching work on the grass).

Evidenced by the raving success Beale was when he managed Rangers on his own?

I would say the work of the two on their own, and that they are getting back together suggests they probably/might work best together, Beale seems like a bit of a weirdo who needs managed

I don’t particularly buy into this way of thinking - Sir Alex used to delegate to his 2 most senior coaches (Mike Phelan and Rene Mulensteen) - Big Carlo does the same with his son … it’s how it works

And Eddie admits he simply wouldn't take a job if he can't round up at least the core of his trusted men.

Just looks like their SPL run was an aligning of stars considering they've reunited in Saudi and not exactly set the league alight.

I don't blame Villa for taking the punt at the time as you're only going to know for certain if the SPL success would translate by giving them a shot. But I'll laugh hysterically at whatever club in the top two tiers inevitably gives Gerrard another shot when he's back from Saudi.

Could be a good coach but a poor manager. Agree though that that Beale alone doesn't account for the successful spell with Rangers, just that it's a pretty big caveat to factor in.

Some delegation is fine of course but I'm personally suspicious of managers who would neglect coaching to the extent that Gerrard allegedly did (essentially deferring the entire thing to Beale, if reports are to be believed). I would suspect a lot more involvement on the part of the two you mentioned, especially.

Unsure of those reports?

Ryan Jack said Gerrard was massively involved in coaching, been numerous interviews with players saying it.

It was all Beale was shown to be myth a long time ago, heavily relied on his coaching yes, but that’s just smart “management” which is what he’s being asked to do.

That has sacked after 4 months written all over it.

Especially if Cunha gets a meaty ban for tearing that Ipswich lad’s geps off and elbowing him in the neck.
