Aye that comment pre-match pissed me off. Basically making out that we're overachieving and he's doing better than he should be. He's not, we're in the sort of position this squad should be. Cretinous comment to make.

If being on course for 60+ points is classed as 'par', it's going to be extremely difficult for any manager to have an above-par season under this regime like.

I'm not sure why Pardew fans are always having a go at the regime, he's been given one of the best squads to work with since Graeme Souness was boss. Arguably better, although we haven't wasted a load of money on duds like he did.

There is so much more to success than just the squad you have

Difficult for managers anyway isnt it. Realistically all of us want to believe our players are just class, not that the manager is raising their game. If they play poorly, often its the managers fault & if they play well the manager has stopped holding them back.

People will always want to believe the current players are capable of more (unless at Debuchy levels), so as a club we can move to the next level. Its harder to praise someone for the level they have the players playing at, when you wont/cant discern how close they are to their best. Brazilliamson is at his you'd imagine.

Same with style of play. Though thats more apparent when a side is really dominating before half time & then comes out to sit back. Its clearer then when we could get more as fans. A lot clearer than the benefits he may be bringing anyway.

60 points would have finished us 8th last season, 7th the season before. I would say that is about 'par' tbf with this squad. Our current points haul has us sitting 8th in the league, again, looking at the table I would say that's about right, 7-8th.

I'm not really sure how many points people think we should be sitting on come the new year? 25? Probably out of the European race but potentially on course for a decent top 10 finish?

Again, putting the team down to embellish the accomplishments of the manager, it's what Pardew himself is doing. He's doing well like, there's just no need to go overboard.

He is very lucky to be where he is, and we as a club are very unlucky to still have him here. There is no way he is going to turn this around and finish in the top 5 again. I think he sunk too far last season.

Gone by December.

I don't even think anyone rates him anymore, you just get the odd person who wants to say he deserves a chance but they always go too far with it. I don't know why they bother tbh.

Can't believe it's been brushed into 'well we are where we should be' with very few praising the revival of both manager and players.

Revival from what, Brett?

Do you think people were angry last season because they thought we should be finishing 14th instead of 16th?  Well shock f***ing horror, people who thought we should finish 6th - 8th get p*ssed off when we finish 16th but don't crawl up the managers ringpiece when he performs to par.

To show mental strength to come back from a horror season. If your going to say in the summer, this season will be exactly the same as last maybe slightly better, but then we revive ourselves to the prediction you had for last season, that should be praised for turning it around and getting back on course. Shouldn't be glossed over simply because it's where we should be, still not easy to get in this position. Pardew and the players have stepped up to mark and improved their ways. Players like Williamson/Tiote showing their capabilities again, Debuchy/Sissoko/Gouffran adapting better and return to form for likes of Cabaye/Colo. We’ve done very well to get ourselves in this position at the half way stage and it should be praised.

Righto, gloss and excuse when doing shit, fawn and praise when doing ok, got it.  Well done, Alan, for taking this squad of quality players and not almost relegating them.  I'm ever so impressed with the way you've managed to get us to midtable especially after the massiive pile of dump that was last season.

I took last season on the chin, accepted he wasn't up to scratch, players weren't up to scratch but was happy for them to be giving another chance and glad they are both doing well. They are in it together and i'm happy to criticise them on the whole together last season and praise them together for there responses this season.

Haven't got a clue how many points we should have. Judging the season so far on both results and performances, I'd be inclined to say it has been above-par.

Not putting the team down or going overboard, simply think labelling the season so far as 'par' or whatever is a bit of a disservice.

8th is par for this squad. The league is shite.

The top 8 is probably as strong as it ever has been. The bottom half is obviously populated by a lot of dross, but that is the case in every league throughout world football. That's why they're bottom half.

Exactly, if we were any position below where we are now that would be below par. Hull are 10th ffs.

I just think 7th-8th is Pardew meeting his goal. The club itself should be spending more in key areas but you can't put that at Pardew's door.

Saying that if everything goes smoothly here we could easily finish top 6 or higher.

Well that was my point start of the season when people were saying we would struggle or being in another dog fight. We have a very talented bunch of players who should be capable of 8th at least. The key for me this season was to just get back on course and basically forget the horror show of last season and so far we are doing a good job of that.

8th is par but that's not to say it's easy to get there because it's still a tough league in which teams can pull random results all over the place. Even this week who would have predicted that shambolic palace side we trounced to only concede once at the Etihad and push them all the way or Hull to smash in 6 past Fulham. As shit as the league looks, it's still tough to pick up points.

Could throw Jose Enrique, Kevin Nolan and (not in his time) Duff, Bassong and  N'Zogbia in there.

Jose has probably made a good move, he's just injured.  Ba is the big one imo.

Forgot Ba just now actually.

Enrique said we would never finish top 6 and we finished 5th the season he left that's the reason I won't forget him.

I think what others have said is correct. 8th is about where we should be finishing. We are in the strange position of being in a group with maybe just Everton and us, Southampton at a push that are much better than the teams below us outside the top 8/9 and are worse than the teams above us.

This is just assuming that the players are arsed about their fortunes on the pitch.
