There would be at least 5 or 6 changes to what I would have posted before the first game. Think it is fair to say no-one would have had Williamson as first choice centre back, Shola anywhere near the squad or Ben Arfa on the bench but that will have changed for a lot. Right now I would go Krul Debuchy Williamson Colo Santon Sissoko Tiote Cabaye Anita Gouffran Remy Been desperate to see Gouffran through the centre but his work rate has been invaluable in front of his full back but Anita has experience playing on both sides of the pitch, works hard and has excellent distribution so I don't see why he couldn't work well out there, plus he deserves to start. Gouffran's anticipation is outstanding and he has scored a fair few from out wide or in midfield so I reckon playing through the middle could really get the best out of him. bowlingcrofty Posted December 15, 2013 Share Posted December 15, 2013 A lot depends on who we're playing and where, but IMO our best line up in terms of quality is: Krul Debuchy Williamson Coloccini Santon Anita Tiote Cabaye HBA Remy Gouffran Harsh on Sissoko and MYM but they'd both come in with the inevitable loss of form of Willo and Tiote. Guest Posted December 15, 2013 Share Posted December 15, 2013 At the moment I'd be tempted with: Krul Debuchy Mbiwa Williamson Coloccini Tiote Sissoko Cabaye Ben Arfa Gouffran Remy Has the flexibility where you could play 4-4-2 like we have with similar personnel at Man Utd, could even go to 3 centre-backs with Debuchy & Gouffran wide during games, to 4-3-3/4-5-1. I'm all for investing in him while he learns, but he isn't learning. Getting that feeling that it's not gonna work out for him here, and that he's going to be the great player I thought he'd be somewhere else. Hope I'm wrong. Anita is good, but a bit overrated IMO. Competing with Cabaye for a spot in the team - who he just doesn't offer as much as quite frankly. Colo seems off to me, and I think we should invest in giving MYM the best possible chance to develop seeing that Colo will either leave/deteriorate soon anyway. Need to get another CB in the summer. 4-4-2 suits us, with Pardew. Gives us the best organisational discipline I think. The wing forward roles confuse us and we look too open. I'd like to see Haidara pushing Santon for his spot too. Probably be a bit harsh on Cheik but he'd still get on in some matches, I just thought Cabaye-Anita against Chelsea was really impressive and has more of an offensive 'fret'. I'd have liked to have found a place for HBA and / or Marveaux, but you have to say we're functioning as a team much better as we are. For the time being at least. Left back is a bit of a problem position. I can't see Santon improving much, so from the point of view of the future I'd go for one of those with more potential. It's hard to pick between Haidara and Dummett because I haven't seen a great deal of either, but Dummett has a bit of steel about him. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

As good as Anita is, he is suited to a possesion based team whereas most of our other players are more suited to more direct, counter attacking football. I don't think Gouff is as effective in the middle where he can get dominated by a Shawcross style of centre back (this is more due to the long punts he's likely to have fired towards his head but whatever). Hatem as a second striker clearly carries the same risks of dreadful hoofball, but I think he's clever enough to drop off and come looking for the ball deeper.
