Mr blatter is claiming that some players have magic powers of regeneration......

"The touchline appears to have acquired powers of revival which even leading medical specialists cannot explain."

He seems to have grown tired of players faking injury, and is proposing an antidote:

(If i was a chelsea player id be injured all the time....)

Its not so bad in PL but we saw in euro cup how bad its getting on the continent.  Can you cure a cultural mentality?

edit- wonder if some diving/simulation is related to betting??

It's just not practical to ask refs to distinguish between fake and genuine injuries.

I found the list of most bookings for simulation since August 2008 very interesting -

•Tottenham - 13

•Chelsea - 12

•Manchester United - 12

•Arsenal - 8

•Liverpool - 8

I still don't understand why the match has to stop for a player to receive treatment. Unless the ref wants a word with a player just let the game continue and let the physio come on, I'm pretty sure that's what happens in rugby?

Why distinguish? Just have a blanket rule, if you go down injured for more than X seconds, say 10, then you are off the pitch for the next 5 minutes. If you are injured, you will get subbed anyway.. if it's 50/50, that's good time for medical team to assess their multi-million pound asset to make sure he's not going to make himself worse, and the play-actors just give their team a disadvantage. I think it's a good idea.

Yeah in rugby you can receive treatment on the pitch and the game continues around you. The movement of the ball and game is slightly more predictable mind, might be a bit chaotic in football.

That's true, but if the players knew the game wasn't going to stop, how many of the fakers (of which most are) would stay down when they are not really hurt.

I think the main problem here - and it's a problem even in the current set-up - is that when a player goes down injured after being fouled and then has to wait before they can get back on, an advantage is handed to the offending team.

We have seen it, more than once at St James', where a player is rolling around the floor in agony one second while he game continues around him, the ball breaks to said mortally wounded player and up he pops to re join the game.  I can even think of at least one event when the "injured" player actually got up and scored a goal.

Rooney wonder goal against us was a sort of example as he was whining to the ref about a tackle and the ball came to him - volley - back of the net wonder goal....

Injury simulation has become part of football because of the referees needing to see something tangible before they blow for a foul.  This is why we see players fling themselves to the ground simply because a opponent has placed a hand on their shoulder!  The whole thing is fucked in my opinion and anything that will help to stop cheating is worth a try....

I'm not sure if a time penalty is workable, I like the idea of physio's on the pitch like the rugby however, like someone said plays in football are more unpredictable than rugby.

However, I am in strong belief that retrospective action is a way forward. Winning a penalty via a dive or getting a player booked or sent off because of a dive should lead to more severe punishment.

The best way to deal with feigning injuries and diving is acting retrospectively using video footage if the referee misses it during the game.

Yeah, didn't the forum have this conversation only a week or so ago?

Taking action for diving during games will make the problem worse, all of a sudden everyone has a man sent off or not allowed on the pitch for a few minutes. Of course the Sky clubs will obviously start becoming better at diving and instead of sending their man off referee's will just end up giving the free kicks/penalties even more.

If the physio comes on then you have to leave the pitch for 5min. The 3rd ref can hold the stopwatch. I predict half the inj would be wiped out at a stroke.

Bookings for diving should carry over games. Got booked for div in the last match and then in the next match: red card.  :D

Some referees can't even keep track of how many Yellows a player is on in the game they are reffing, let alone the player's last game too!

That's the key to it really, you don't need to bring physios on during play, just leave the player there until play stops naturally unless he's in serious trouble.  A player holding his leg or making ridiculous hand gestures as if they're in a rap video doesn't equal being in serious trouble.

If this happens you'll soon find most of these players getting back on their feet much quicker because their is no advantage to it anymore.
