Jack Colback (now a free agent)

Jack Colback has praised Newcastle United’s character after the Magpies fought back to claim a “massive point” against Sunderland in Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby.

The 26-year-old midfielder, who filled in as a makeshift left-back against his former side, also revealed that Rafa Benitez’s half-time message helped inspire their comeback.

Newcastle have struggled when they have fallen behind all season, but Benitez told his charges to remain positive and keep trying to play their own game.

“He (Benitez) just said we had to be positive and keep going,” Colback explained.

“Everybody knows our biggest weakness this season is going behind and struggling to get back into games, but we’ve done that.

“Obviously, we’re not happy with a point by any means.

“But when you go 1-0 down, you’re satisfied at the end to get a draw.”

A draw ensured the Magpies remain three points off safety and languishing in the Premier League dropzone heading into this international weekend.

Though the United squad were disappointed not to claim all three points, the fact they ended their six-match losing run against their bitter rivals was a positive, believes Colback.

“It’s a massive point in the end,” he added.

“You’re hoping to get the win, but once you go 1-0 down, to get a point is a good result in the end.

“I think it was cagey. Neither side wanted to give anything away or lose the game knowing how important it was.

“Once we went 1-0 down we had to react and show character. We did that and managed to get the equaliser.”

Colback came up through Sunderland’s youth system and has represented both sides of the Tyne-Wear divide in derbies, even scoring at St James’ Park for the Black Cats back in 2014.

Being born and bred in the North East, Colback does not need reminding of the magnitude of this fixture.

“Obviously, being from the area I realise how big the game is,” Colback said.

“You kind of get texts off friends beforehand praying we don’t lose and praying that we get a win.

“It’s a great game to play in.

“We haven’t had too much joy in it, but we’ll take a point.”

Jermain Defoe put Sunderland ahead just before half-time on Sunday, before Aleksandar Mitrovic jumped highest in the 83rd minute to nod Newcastle level.

Speaking about his United teammate, Colback said of Mitrovic: “That’s probably his biggest strength – his aerial ability.

“It was a great header – it was a great player by Gini (Georginio Wijnaldum) to get it in there (and whip the cross in) – and I think we probably deserved it in the end.

“It would have been harsh to lose it in the end.”

Just 18 minutes into the Tyne-Wear derby, Colback fouled Fabio Borini and picked up his 10th booking of the season.

That automatically triggers a two-match suspension and the Geordie midfielder will now miss United’s upcoming clashes with Norwich City and Southampton.

But Colback was philosophical about the ban, stating: “It was going to come at some point.

“I think I did well to get to this game without one.

“It felt like I won the ball, to be honest, but the referee thought otherwise.

“It’ll be disappointing to miss the two games, but that’s just the way it is. I’ve got to deal with it.”

Fuck off.

Probably do alright next season in fairness.

Fair comment. He's a top player at that level.

I couldn't disagree more to be honest, I think he'll be fucking shit at Championship level as well. There isn't one redeeming quality he has to succeed in such a competitive and physical league

This is a major reason we are shit as a team when he plays. He just chases the ball like a dog, leaves his position, drags the team around and leaves spaces in behind the midfield. He's absolutely tragic. The best DMs hold their position and intercept play or tackle whilst being approach by oncoming attackers. Not chase every opposition player in possession, only to be turned inside out by Fabio Borini and Glenn Whelean.

Unfortunately most match going fans like "his effort" because they notice him more whilst he chases the fucking ball like a loon. Hate the cunt.

Fuck off you pastey mackem noodle.

He does sometimes to be fair, but the point stands - I don't see that being an especially useful characteristic in that league. It's the second professional level at the end of the day, there's some good teams down there...we still need to play football to win (even if it's just getting the ball wide and pounding the box with crosses). I can't see how him being constantly out of position by applying pressure in stupid positions will help us, the only thing is that we won't be punished by his crap positioning as much as in the Premier League...not exactly a positive

Apart from a loan spell at Ipswich (?), he hasn't played at that level has he? Feck knows if he'd be good enough. Hopefully a newly promoted club like Burnley or Hull might fancy him and give £4m or so.

I agree with both of you, I was just being tongue in cheek. ;)

The great of the Gallowgate, the lad of the Leazes, his excellency of the East and the magician of the Milburn will be back at the weekend. Form an orderly queue to celebrate appropriately.

One of the reasons I'm desperate for Rafa to stay on next season. I think he'd get shot of Colback pretty quickly if we were in the premier. In the championship he probably wouldn't get exposed as badly.

To tell you the truth, I would rather have him in the middle than Wijnaldum. At least Colback touches the ball now and again.

Disclaimer: Colback is still a cunt
