Why do stadiums only last twenty to thirty years in America? The Georgia Dome opened in '92. I think Americans must treat them like cruise ships, sail on them a few times then demand something flashier.

Isn't it largely due to the franchise nature of sports over there? Clubs use stadium's as leverage. "Build us a new one or we'll fuck off to LA" in the NFL for example.

It's all about suites/luxury boxes. Those stadiums built in 60/70/80s don't have them and cannot add them easily. It's just too much revenue to loose out on, so they pull the "build me a new stadium here or we move to a city who will".

For the cities/States building the stadiums it's all about the tax revenue - both game day ticket/concession sales but also income tax on players salary

You still need new stadiums. The Georgia Dome is old as fuck, it's got crap facilities throughout, and it's not really condusive to any other sport. You need these type of developments in cities as they also bring in far more revenues/jobs etc. They also will pin these to other multi faceted mixed-use developments with retail, residential, hotel, etc. It's smart transformative business in most cases.

Georgia Dome is 23 years old. There's stuff in my fridge older than that!
