54
So that means that in every game you played, you played a team that was the Champions of there respected nations, insane that really.
Village Idiot
A proper Champions League run. Of course, we weren't Spanish champions ourselves...
Guest firetotheworks
Also, I promise I will try to shut up about us winning the CL, but en route to the final we beat the champion of England (City), the champion of France (PSG), the champion of Germany (Bayern), and the champion of Italy (Juventus). A beautiful run. How does it feel in comparison to the others?
Collage
Maicon was brilliant, when at his best he was better than Alves IMO.

A beautiful run. How does it feel in comparison to the others? This is the one I have enjoyed the most, certainly. However a large part of that - besides it being part of a treble - is due to the fact I'm back living in Barcelona and the buzz is incredible. I was living abroad for most of our current era and it's great to be in town living a season like this one.
Flip
Maicon was brilliant, when at his best he was better than Alves IMO. Possibly, but it lasted like a year or two max at his absolute peak.

joeyt
Lilian Thuram was pretty good
The College Dropout
Alves has an excellent relationship with Messi. He's perfect for Barcelona (and was excellent at Sevilla too). But not managing to replicate that same level consistently for Brazil is an issue. Actually, I think Marcelo is under-rated.
AyeDubbleYoo
Aye, Marcelo is brilliant, been impressed whenever I watch him.
Village Idiot
Not a rightback though, which is what we were talking about. And yes, he's a very good player.
Elliottman
Love watching Marcelo.
Mole_Toonfan
The reason Marcelo is maybe underappreciated is because he can't defend a lick. Class going forward though obviously. Also Thuram was one of my favourite defenders growing up.
Taylor Swift
Maicon was brilliant, when at his best he was better than Alves IMO. Possibly, but it lasted like a year or two max at his absolute peak. I still remember your Maicon was the bestest ever phase, dude. You ain't escaping that easy. I distinctly remember you saying Maicon was easily better than Alves when that was only because Maicon was the more popular player. Alves at his best was better than Maicon. Village Idiot
Lilian Thuram was pretty good I think he was even better at centreback, imho. Dose Cannavaro-Thuram and Gallas-Thuram partnerships for club and country...
Mole_Toonfan
Thuram was like Abidal on PEDs basically

I think Maicons year with Inter when they won the CL was higher than any peak Dani Alves has had and if I remember it correct the year before as well. Unfortunately his peak only lasted for 2 seasons or so. But I do think that Maicon as RB was much more complete than Dani during those years. Maicon more popular player? He was one of the most underrated players at that time. He was so important for Inter.
Guest firetotheworks
There are loads and loads of quality left backs to choose from in an all-time list though and Marcelo wouldn't get anywhere near it. Right Back really is slim pickings. Zanetti, Cafu, Thuram, Alves, Lahm..Zambrotta? I've never seen Carlos Alberto etc. You go left back and you've got Maldini, Cole, Carlos, Lizarazu and the quality is so much higher overall imo. Players like Marcelo come and go at left back, but if he played right back you'd probably say that he's up there with some of the best that there have been in modern times. Village Idiot
Nobody can't get near Roberto Carlos or Maldini at LB, imho.
Mole_Toonfan
Maicon benefited at Inter from being covered by multiple players (Eto'o, Cambiasso and Motta) He was never as great as Alves offensively and Alves never had the luxury of basically people defending for him. Always thought he was better and I'll never change my mind, in terms of individual performances Alves has had multiple seasons of 15+ assists from fullback He's been consistently doing that for a long time, even at Sevilla he was doing that. Don't quite think he's the best ever like KI mentioned but he's in the conversation.

I'm always told about Djalma Santos when I'm back in Brazil. But from those I've seen live it has to be Cafu and possibly Thuram. The rest are 2nd tiers to these guys, even Dani, Lahm, Zambrotta, Maicon etc.

Maicon was a beast defensively during that time as well as being a beast offensively. The season they won the CL, he scored 7 goals and had 12 assists while being one of the best defensively. That's why I rate him higher during his peak, obviously in terms of career it's hard to look past Dani between those two. But for those two years and the peak Maicon had I thought was in terms of being a right-back higher than Dani's.
