Cautiously optimistic about the return of adidas but a couple of red flags for me:

 

1) is no one else slightly concerneed about the creative guy from adidas who seems to think that three bold black stripes is an 'iconic' feature of NUFC shirts? Firstly, like most marketing people, he doesnt understand what 'iconic' means, but more importantly none of the shirts he's referencing there are particulary fondly remembered or are associated with any success. If your looking for fan favourites surely you've got to be looking at 83-86 home and away, all three Asics shirts or the 95-96 home and away? I know its all subjective but I do wonder if this is the right guy to be leading  the NUFC design team if he thinks that Bukta shirt or the NTL one is 'iconic'.

 

2) I am very skeptical that adidas will grant us 'elite' status at this stage. Only Arsenal and Man Utd have that honour in the PL. Leicester, who were fairly recent PL and FA Cup winners, were only ever a tier 2 team. So we will very likely end up with some very standard looking template design shirts, like Sunderland got, and wont have those 'player' issue bespoke designs that most fans feel we would deserve. We are probably at least three or four years off anything changing there.

I dont know how thats calculated either, but the 'elite' teams - Man Utd, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Real Madrid - all have social media followers in the 10s of millions, whereas we have lower single digit millions of followers. So i'd guess its something to do with global reach.

‘What had we recently won at the time of them initially signing the deal with us in 95? They know how much stuff they can sell to us when the fan base is engaged, regardless of our trophy haul or lack of.

Castore's sudden rise across many sports has made my very suspicious about their operations etc.

It's their own hierarchy tbf, putting us in there might undermine it, but they can do what they want really.

I’ve been all over the world when I was in the RAF and like the song goes, us Geordies do indeed get everywhere. You’d be surprised how much global reach we already have.

Be staggered if we have a deal in the “hundreds of millions” over 5 years if we’re not one of their elite teams. Think they can see we’re on the rise as a club and wanted to tie down a long term relationship before other big brands came sniffing.

60 odd million a season would be reasonable I reckon given what some other clubs get.

I guess. Which is why I asked the ‘elite’ question earlier. Would it go on past/recent success, or potentially perceived future growth. Even given my bias, I can see why Chelsea and Liverpool would possibly be offered more than us.

But people are saying we should/could be getting £60m, which isn’t far off Man City’s £65m deal. Don’t tell me the two clubs are currently equally ‘comparable’ on and off the pitch. I think some people are going to be disappointed in the deal. £40m I can see, or around that- 50 top end.

Imagine there's some sort of performance related bonus in these sorts of deals? I.e. they'll pay us more in a given season based on CL qualification/progression?

I think £40m sounds about right for now but wouldn’t be surprised if it’s lower. That said, we can guarantee any funds they pay us will free up FFP funds to strengthen the first team, a good incentive to back us.

PL can say they won’t sign it off, like Chelsea’s deal. That was related to the TV deal but I’m sure it would come under their ‘above £1m’ scrutiny for being fair and proper.
