I am all for a 64 team World Cup and 32 team Euro and AFCON. Tournaments in multiples of 12 have a far worse design than those in multiples of 8 and are less entertaining.

Over the last 96 years the World Cup has been won by only 8 x different countries.

You do the math.

Brand new nation winning every third World Cup, then? Seems a decent ratio that :dontknow:

Not disagreeing with the "looks boring" statement, but that's still a new winner once every third World Cup, which doesn't sound like the same nations "winning all the time" to me :dontknow: It just feels like that I reckon because it's only held once every four years, been 15 World Cup's since there were back-to-back winners as well

If your class at school contained kids from every country in the entire world but only kids from 8 countries had been smart enough to eat the teachers apple in the last 96 years then even if the apple only gets eaten every 4 years it’s still shite for the rest of the kids in the world.

Even more so if the kids in England have had to listen to the ear AIDS of Three Fucking Bastard Lions at least every four years over the last thirty fucking years.

If you chuck out Uruguay who haven't won it since 1950 (seventy six years ago) and England who won it once sixty years ago it's six:

Italy

Germany

Brazil

Argentina

France

Spain

Also chuck out Spain cos they’ve only won it once.

It’s a fucking snoozefest of a tournament.

France and Spain are the only ‘new’ winners in my lifetime, and I’m 43

I’d be all for an 8 team WC and a 4 team Euros

When I went to Brasil all I did was slurp cachaca, admire beautiful women and hoover bugle. Not sure how they can be arsed to go and play football when life is so sweet.

There are 24 clubs who’ve been champions of England - an annual competition which predates the World Cup by half a century.  It would be fantastically unlikely to find new winners of the tournament - and in terms of my lifetime, Leicester are the only first time winners.  West Ham are probably the only sizeable English club not to win it.

When I look at the WC, the only two countries which spring to mind who probably should have won it at some point are Holland and Hungary.  I don’t think there is another nation who it would be surprising to think that they haven’t won it.  Portugal - maybe, at a push?  Though they’ve actually been mediocre for most of international football history.  Bulking out the tournament with more teams is no more likely to bring about a new winner.

Do it, but make it a single elimination bracket.

I’d be ok with this if the group stage is eliminated.  I’d actually be ok with every nation competing if was straight knockout, with a preliminary qualifying round or two, if it meant that they abolished WC qualifiers (and friendlies)

There’s a part of me at each WC that really wants the Dutch to win it (when they’re there, that is).   And another part of me which finds it sort of funny that they’ve never won it despite the incredible talent and sides they’ve had over the years.

I didn't say "champions of England", I said "Premier League winners. That was done purposefully to make for a better and more "your lifetime" relevant comparison.

Howay lads. I’ve seen my country just once at the WC. Odds on I’ll never see us there again. Still like a little kid at christmas each time.

The most wrong opinion ever this.

It's the best thing in football by miles

It's not, but it's literally called the WORLD Cup and it's the most popular sport on the planet in a tournament held once every four years. Surely we can cope with a few poor teams getting in and getting involved, the long term gains are definitely there IMO in that will inspire even more people to get involved with the game.

My only gripe is the shambles of a format that both this and the last couple of Euros has had, just go all in and make it a 64 team tournament.

The World Cup is fucking shit, in my opinion.

Couldn’t pay me to watch it.

If they cancelled it forever I’d raise a toast to celebrate. And I’d crack open the decent champagne too, not Aldi prosecco.

Now I’m not saying everyone has to think the same as me, but I am saying I have zero interest in it. And zero interest in International football generally.
