World Cup 2026 predictions:

🥇Winner:  France
📉 Flop: Portugal
👀 Dark Horse: Mexico
🏆 Golden Boot: Mbappe

Who have Mexico got in their side that we should be looking out for?

I’m scanning through the kick off times and there are several games that start at 11pm/12am in the group stage.

I know it’s not exactly unusual for games to be at awkward times, but generally that applies cos the tournament is in another country/continent. This bad boy is in the country I live in.

I’m completionist to the extent that if I can’t watch every one of these games, it feels inevitable that my interest will drop off…. We’ll see…

Ended up with the FourFourTwo chart which will do - going to have each daughter fill out one. At least there was a Hunter Davies interview to keep me happy. Also this - a gentle World Cup Quiz to whet everyone's appetite. All questions are about the Men's World Cup main tournament, excluding qualifying:

1. What is the biggest goal tally ever scored by a player in a single World Cup match? Bonus points for the player name and which World Cup it was in.

2. How many countries have won the World Cup at least three times? Name them and how many times each country won.

3. The Scotland manager went unbeaten through World Cup 1974. Who was he, and which three teams did they play against?

4. Which player scored in all six of Brazil's matches when they won the World Cup in 1970?

5. Who wore No.9 for England in 2002?

6. Who is the only World Cup manager to have reached 25 games in the dugout [sic] at the tournament? Which World Cup did he win?

7. Who opened the scoring with an own goal in the 2018 final between France and Croatia?

8. Which British referee infamously showed the same player three yellow cards in 2006? Can you name the player?

9. Who is Scotland's all-time World Cup Finals top scorer? WIth how many goals?

10. Not including shootouts, how many goals have been scored at the World Cups (not including qualifying) - (a) Fewer then 3000 or (b) More than 3000?

11. Who beat who in the first World Cup Final, and what was the score?

12. Which goalkeeper holds the record for the most saves in a single World Cup game, making 16 stops in 2014? Who was he playing against?

13. Which nation at this summer's tournament is nicknamed the "Lions of Mesopotamia"?

14. Who is the highest scoring Asian in World Cup history? He scored four goals through 2010, 2014 and 2018.

15. Who are England's three top scorers in the World Cup? How many have each scored?

16. Who has more clean sheets - (a) Peter Shilton or (b) Manuel Neuer?

17. Who was the first person to win the World Cup as both a player and a manager?

Answers in spoilers please. Any complaints please see FourFourTwo...

MST stays undefeated as the best sports time zone.

Isn't this the cause of the stupid expansion so you've got games spread across 6/8 hours.

It would no doubt be a little more reasonable with less teams, but also you probably can’t be running many games at 4pm local time in some of these west coast locations without killing off half the participants.

Sounds a good compromise for me.

This shite started with the World Cup - Italy got to the World Cup Final in 1994 despite finishing third out of four in the group stage.  82-94 were 24-team tournaments, and 86-94 had the ‘best third place teams’ shite

This made me wonder how 82 was done with 24 teams. Only 12 through then a second round of 3-team groups, one going through!

The bizarre nature of the 82 WC led to some really results which forced FIFA to change it up for 86

1950 remains my favourite format mess - though the way the fixtures came out for the final round did mean that the final fixture also kind of worked as an unofficial ‘final’
