We don’t have many good English left backs with the experience he has. He was one of our better players in the Euros too. I haven’t watched much of him at Man U this season mind. Because he hasn’t played.
Belfast Boy
Is this the last squad before he names his world cup squad? So if you aren't in this there is little hope?
Likelylad
Starting someone at the World Cup who’s played next to no football always go well for England ?
LionOfGosforth
Think Wilson was in with a shout were it not for his injury, Toney has been good though
Nolberto Disco
Who's the hell is Marc Guehi? Seems odd having Newcastle players playing for England. A huge part of me hope they don't play in case they get injured, and in any case wasting time playing for England when they could be resting with us. Who do we think will be the next first cap player that will come from us? I think Dan Burn will be next in line for a cap at CB if he continues to stay fit and play decent enough for us. cubaricho
Poor Matty Targett man. Ready made and not even a call up over people who haven’t played a minute all season. Laughable by Southgate.

I couldn't give an arse about England anymore, especially after getting battered by Hungary. I can't get behind Southgate, never have, never will - in spite of the 'success'. He's a FA Man, more a politician than a winner. Italy appoint Conte, we promote Southgate - says it all. Any successful National teams bring form from clubs/already gelled players that know how to play with each other. I can understand calling up Maguire up on that basis. Whilst Maguire is a bag of piss at club level, it's clear he's core to something at England. Personally I'd play Stones-Walker at CB. Southgate has never had the balls to ever play with less than two defensive minded midfielders. That's been a frustration of the nation. If he can play with 5 attack minded players (ex. Rice--Foden-Bellingham--Sancho-Sterling-Kane) I'll get on board with what he's doing. Back 3, with Walker right sided CB worked - that was 4 years ago. That's the most innovative thing this man has ever done, and the idea came from Steve Holland. I have no hope for the World Cup. I don't think the FA will actually sack Southgate. He's 'their man'. He'll come out and make a press conference (like Sven did), and fall on his sword; and receive a huge pay-off doing so - all the while non league/grass roots under FA rule crumbles. Jaqen
Why are people surprised at Maguire getting a call up? He's going to be one of the first names on the team sheet.

Froggy
Mental that Shaw and Maguire are in there. Both have been shit and have lost their places to new signings almost instantly. Mental that Rashford and Sancho are not there either. Picked on form my arse.

relámpago blanco
Centre back options are awful. Dan Burn should be there ahead of Maguire. Edited September 16, 2022 by relámpago blanco

St1pe
Saw this opinion expressed a lot or something similar. I get it. However we’ve won fuck all and that squad of players came very close twice. The German side that dominated for so long kept the same group of core players despite club form. I think if we don’t win the WC or don’t get anywhere close then it’d be time to shake it up but I don’t blame Southgate for staying loyal to a team he’s built. That said if Bellingham doesn’t start he needs to go ?
Yorkie
I'd slag off the selection had he not been vindicated at literally every turn over the last six years. It might be a mistake to stick with his main core of players who've achieved a lot for him, but I'll wait for hindsight to make that call.
AyeDubbleYoo
It’s the eternal debate of form versus a consistent international team. Seems to be unfair on the people who don’t get in, but I guess the manager would argue that he can’t go changing the whole squad every couple of months. Don’t know what the right answer is TBH, somewhere in the middle I suppose. Ideally these ‘trusted’ England players would be good enough to play well in the PL and stay in their club teams, but seems quite a few of them aren’t. RodneyCisse
Just realised Maddison left out too because he’s playing in a shit Leicester side but has been involved in 10 G/A in the last 9 games for them.
