Seems to be unfair on the people who don’t get in, but I guess the manager would argue that he can’t go changing the whole squad every couple of months. Don’t know what the right answer is TBH, somewhere in the middle I suppose. Ideally these ‘trusted’ England players would be good enough to play well in the PL and stay in their club teams, but seems quite a few of them aren’t. Aye it's a tough one. You have someone like Klose who had a shit season before bossing the next World Cup, and then you have Shearer who went nearly two years without a goal for England but whose club form kept him in the side, then won the Golden Boot. A huge part of me hope they don't play in case they get injured, and in any case wasting time playing for England when they could be resting with us. Who do we think will be the next first cap player that will come from us? I think Dan Burn will be next in line for a cap at CB if he continues to stay fit and play decent enough for us. I can’t see Burn funding a place. I thought Targett was in with an outside chance if not for injury.
Guest
Maguire and Stones (even Dier) also have years of international experience of being able to bring the ball out and help break down teams who sit back and allow little space. Something that will be important particularly in the early rounds. You're asking a lot of people like Guehi, Burn, Tomori, etc to step up and do the same thing when they've little experience of it.at tournament level. I think Podolski too at some point? I understand going with the players that have performed well for England in the past. It's a team and it has it's own dynamics. It's not just the best performing England XI. But picking the likes of Shaw who have been criminally poor as a defender for a long time. It does smell bad. The College Dropout
Shaw in particular has had 1 good season, in 5 years.
Guest
Surely we'll play Chilwell? I know he's only just come back but Shaw's another one with experience latter rounds so good cover if we need it? I'd start phasing these players out after the World Cup unless their club form starts matching though.
TheBrownBottle
Much as I like having them in the squad - they’re the type of solid, mid-table pros that we’ve lacked for yonks - Burn and Targett aren’t England quality for me. That doesn’t mean I think Southgate’s continuing selection of Luke Shaw makes a lick of sense, mind. Pope and Trippier should be shoo-ins for the squad (and possibly team) though. AyeDubbleYoo
LB has been a problem for ages, hence Trippier being moved over there. Guess Chilwell would be the answer if he could stay fit.

Both have been shit and have lost their places to new signings almost instantly. Mental that Rashford and Sancho are not there either. Picked on form my arse. Sancho and Rashford were picked in multiple squads when club form was poor and they didn't deserve it to be fair too. Still think both have a good chance of going to the WC anyway. Doubt we'll take both Tammy and Toney so think Rashford will take that spot and it's probably a toss up between Bowen and Sancho.
Astroblack
International football football, you want players good on the ball. Can't think of any situation where I'd rather have Bowen than Sancho. Wouldn't want Bowen starting, coming off the bench, anything. Just can't see it working for him on the international stage. I also don’t think he’s had many bad games - but he isn’t an international class footballer. If you want proof, look at the gulf in quality between him and our FB on the opposite flank. Even then, there is an argument that Trippier isn’t even one of England’s best three right backs. This isn’t to say that Targett isn’t a good PL FB, but he isn’t England quality for me. gbandit
There are far fewer international quality left backs pushing for squad places than right backs. Targett has no flash to his game but he’s extremely reliable. If we become a top six side you can bet that he’ll get a call up
Nolberto Disco
Need to respect the fact that certain players playing together consistently builds something stronger. That's Southgate's single redeeming feature for me. If England are ever going to actually win anything, we need to build a core of players to build a team around - like you would want at club level. Southgate is half way, but in my opinion the manager/coach to do this. Example, playing Trippier left back. He wants Tripps in the squad, as he's obviously good for the team and won't let the side down, but Trippier isn't and never will be a left back; doing so strangles you're whole game - even a side like Andorra can cut off your build up play when you have a right footed left back. It's clear to see we've talented players, but I've no trust in Southgate to actually have 11 men on a field and win when it counts. It's always been laughable to me that we even hired Southgate. Other countries want to hire their best, or hire proven winners - Del Bosque/Spain, Scolari/Brazil-Portugal. We've a bloke who relegated boro. KaKa
Like the attack and midfield selected today for England. Really nice mix of players. The central defenders are shocking though, and don't like Walker at left back either.

They should have a left footer out there, as Southgate usually has his full backs overlap. Anytime he plays these right footers out there they always cut back onto their right foot and don't deliver the ball into the box well enough.
