hazeyb
BBC article suggesting that Jonjo was the best value signing of the January window; http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/35526983 Apparently he should be valued at £23.5m. Same article suggests we overspent by £5m on Townsend. Based on their performances so far they might be right.

According to that article players older than 27 with low contracts are a good proposition for teams looking to improve the first team.

1964
What Shelvey always does is play a positive pass, always for the man to run on to. For so long we have had midfield players who pass to the man and it makes our build up play so pedestrian. The difference is clear to me, he is essential if we want to counter attack teams

hazeyb
Are you saying Townsend has been s***... In the two games he has played for us? I'd say he been distinctly average in 50% of the games he has played However he was good in the other one, so I guess he could prove to be worth the money. I keep hoping for a winger who plays on the wing and crosses, and he doesn't really appear to be that type of player so I'm going to have a bias against him. Seat allocation on the flight to their lads holiday Can't blame him. Probably doesn't want to be stuck next to Doumbia who'll be doing Wordsearch, cups of tea followed by sleep. Hanshithispantz
Don't really understand the hate tbh, I thought he was our best player by a distance. Chelsea took advantage of our high line and the fact our central defence was composed of a 34 year old man, a lunatic, and a goalkeeper who was planted to the end of his 6 yard box. joeyt
The defenders are rightly getting criticised for their defending but this lad offers absolutely zero protection at all to them. Its so easy to get the ball around him and then he completely gives up. Its leaving us so exposed
Hanshithispantz
We knew that when we bought him. It's why we're playing Tiote alongside him. Everytime he gets the ball he looks to play it forwards though and unlike Everton he was playing the ball like he hadn't just gobbed a handfull of ritalin. Shush
I think Shelvey is very poor in the DM position without the ball, for me he needs to always sit higher up the pitch in the middle with someone behind him doing the protecting. His best attributes is getting the ball and quickly moving it forward in a positive fashion. It's easy to criticise him for not being good at things he shouldn't need to do much. Wouldn't be at all surprised if Wijnaldum is dropped for the next few away games in order to play three in there, with Shelvey the most advanced. Assuming Tiote is still here, Colback will surely be used at left back unless Dummett is back so Saivet should play. When's Anita back?
joeyt
If he's playing as a 2 in a 4-2-3-1 then he's going to have to do his fair share of defending instead of watching the ball go past him while pointing and shouting at teammates. Tiote goes haring around the pitch and Shelvey is incapable of snuffing anything out in the middle once Tiote does that. I'm not advocating dropping him as he's clearly the best passer but his positioning and his immobility is terrible when defending and I'd advocate playing Saivet alongside Tiote with Shelvey in the middle

I don't mind Shelvey being the middle of the three behind the striker. From there he can really open things up for those around him. Leave Tiote and Saivet to mop up and do the simple passing. I said this last week, drop Wijnaldum and play Tiote / Saivet as the two in the middle with Shelvey advanced. If previous form is anything to go by McClaren might consider this in about March 2017.
