He's ok if he can keep up his current form. There will be a transition period where we will have to retain some of the players. Besides the owners have shown good sense in the length of the contracts given out to the new signings. No more 6 year nonsense.

But he's still under contract for next season anyway isn't he? Do you really think we'll need him beyond that?

Reminds me of Scott Parker some respects. Never really appreciated, much less loved. (And I include myself among the indifferent).

He's been quite good.  Still I don't think he'll get a new contract.

I can see giving Schaar a contract. He's a good squad player, would be very useful in a back three, is suited to Howe's style of play, etc., etc. Replacing him with an equivalent could be a bit pricy with the Newcastle tax and all.

Schar is another who I think would reject the chance to be a squad player. Good enough for 1st team in most European leagues. Needs to play to keep his international place.

The midfielders worth keeping are Joelinton, Bruno, Willock and current-form Shelvey. We could add a couple more in the summer but there are also other areas to reinforce too. Perhaps they are looking at the home-grown quota. I trust that any extension is of reasonable length.

You're probably right. He'd do well in Italy. Still, the club can make an offer. The next will be his third World Cup. Maybe he'll be looking to retire from International football.

I'd definitely be looking to keep him, I just wouldn't hold it against him if he left. To think the likes of Dummett and Ritchie were tied down by Bruce and this guy was overlooked. It's fucking criminal. Not that he would have signed for Bruce, mind.

Unfashionable on here and Bruno's going to come in and make an impact at some point, but Shelvey's possibly becoming a bit of an underrated part of our recent run/since Howe came in. Had another solid, unspectacular match again I thought, just keeps us ticking over nicely.

Thought it was hilarious how he just fired every free kick straight at the goalkeeper. Tbh I don't fully hate it either, a hard shot at the keeper has a better chance of going in than his usual trick if firing it forty feet over the bar.

When he is motivated and fit he can go on runs of good form like this.

We all know by now though that he can’t be relied on and it’s just a matter of time before something goes to shit. He’s basically our Granit Xhaka.

Has he showed effort? Yes, has he played better and looked more fit under Howe? Yes he has.

Having said the above I still think he’s immobile and slow both on and off the ball. He’s too weak defensively for what he offers offensively. Hope we upgrade our CM enough in the summer so that he’s nowhere near the 1st team next season. IMHO I ideally don’t even want him on the bench for next season if we stay up. I understand that we won’t be signing that many players so I’m content with him being backup to Bruno at best.

I know we are winning but I still see so many weaknesses in his game. Details here and there that will be massively improved on once we get one or two new CM in the summer. Players that have quality on the ball but can also run. That will improve us both defensively and offensively. Credit where it’s due though, he’s done reasonably well lately.

I don't recognise the Shelvey I've seen play since just before Christmas from your post.

He has improved greatly but he’s still immobile and a liability. Only a few games ago he should have seen red for a stupid scissor tackle.

Totally agree about the red mist and I posted similar earlier, don't get the immobile bit though, goes against what I've actually watched. He even looks to have more pace making it appear that it wasn't lack of pace but lack of defensive thought that let opposition players run off him.

I get it but even just switching play effectively can be huge if you're set up right, not everything in football has to be some outrageous, defence splitting wonder ball.

Pressing, one of the most effective tools in modern football, requiring virtually no actual skill with the ball, is another example of this. It's the same with Henderson under Klopp who has been vital for years despite everyone calling him shite (Henderson is obviously better than Shelvey I know).

Fair enough mate. Personally I still think and see him chasing shadows too often. But imo it isn’t quite as obvious anymore since we are better in our tactical side of the game and our positioning.

Yip, the big thing is, and this goes for a few of them, is this form permanent or temporary ?
