Honestly Sturridge is probably England's most naturally talented player. Nobody else in the squad can score a goal like the one he scored in the EL final. It's absolutely the right decision to gamble on taking him. Certainly over the likes of Carroll and Defoe.

Carroll would be one of the strongest in the air in the entire tournament and would be able to score goals that no one ens there could do.

IMO you take Carroll over Rashford in that he injects the big man/target man role for Plan B/C. You also take Townsend over Barkley or Sterling or Lallana to play as the direct, pacy winger with an eye for goal and an unpredictable match winning left foot. Sturridge fit is the best striker in England IMO so I'm happy with his inclusion.

A 23-man squad should be like a toolbox, with players for different situations. You take fast players, wingers, tall strikers, versatile players, big-game players, set-piece specialists etc. A mix of form and reliabilty.

Not only has Hodgson taken too many risks (taking ALL of Wilshere, Sturridge, Rashford and Barkley), there's no real plan B.

I don't think Defoe would be very good if he played for Man Utd. Would have to be involved in build up play a lot more and wouldn't have the chance to get in behind the defence as much. He's not suited to playing for a big team IMO

Agreed. Wilshere, Sturridge & Henderson is a big risk. All could break down with no surprise.

I just don't think Barkley is that good.

Maybe we aren't counting them. But he has over 130 goals for Spurs. 90 in the PL.

Based on that logic we should be taking Darren Bent.

Defoe's record wasn't even that good last season, just did enough to keep a shit team up. Rashford is only 18 and obviously has tge chance of a big international future, so it makes sense including him ahead of Defoe for me, but I'd have taken Carroll for obvious reasons.

Did Darren Bent score 15 PL goals last season?

Has Rashford played in a wide position for the first team?

If Rashford was at Sunderland he would have been given 15 min on the wing before being dropped for not winning enough headers

I would have taken Carroll ahead of Rashford and Sturridge as well btw. Been in good form for West Ham since returning from injury, and when he's on his game, he's a nightmare for defenders.

Why should England actually have real options to influence games, to try and win the tournament? Surely it's better to placate the pundits and media in order to avoid criticism for leaving out the household names. I honestly had hope for Hodgson. Hope he does well but with that selection he's looking at an early exit imo. Possibly even in the group stage.

Which household names do you think he should've left out?

Sturridge, Henderson and Wilshere IMO. Milner at a push, but I'd take him ahead of Drinkwater as I reckon the Leicester guys are absolutely shattered. I personally wouldn't rely too heavily on Rooney, but I would concede that Hodgson can't leave him out of the squad completely.

I would probably start him alongside-ish Kane, and leave Vardy on the bench. Vardy playing on the left of 4231 is just moronic, and encapsulates everything that is wrong with Team England. Shoe-horning en vogue players for the fuck of it.

just hope his head doesn't drop and he feels the need to join a premiership club.

I think being dropped from the squad actually increases his chance of leaving. a good euros would have continued some feel good factor from rafa deciding to stay and may have inspired townsend to really give it a go in the championship.

I still cant see the point of Lallana !! what does he offer that Barclay, Ali, Milner, Henderson and Wilshere doesn't ? at least Townsend offers pace and the ability to get round the the outside of a team

He finished the season in a Premiership side in shit hot form and he still got omitted.

Shit hot form ? 6 games unbeaten in which we played well in 1 game that counted for anything. His own personal form should have seen him in if only because he offers stuff we don't have on the bench.
