Failing to get Townsend is the exact definition of failing to back Benitez. If the manager wants him, and the club are truly confident in both his ability to take us up and his judgement on the player then they should make it happen.

A £2m loan fee might be a bitter pill to swallow, but then we shouldn't have got f***ing relegated in the first place should we. It'll be a lot more costly if the manager decides these c***s are still as bad as Keegan said.

We might still get him tbf. Backing a manager doesn't require the avoidance of any negotiations. He was backed appropriately in the Summer, as the 6 point gap shows.

Agree with that.

If we miss out on Townsend for the sole reason that we wouldn't pay £2m to get him on loan, it'll obviously be very frustrating and be very typical of the board we've come to know. It would be a worry going into the summer. But if Rafa lost his shit I think it would be an overreaction given the context of the whole situation.

And we don't need to buy in the same way Villa do, no way.

Villa needed to buy and have signed Lansbury, Hourihane and Bjarnason and Bree. There's really no excuse for us not signing anyone like.

We probably don't need to buy tbh.

But the window isn't so tense that you cannot sign players if you want to (hence Villa signing starters from 2 rivals). And all evidence suggests Benitez wanted to sign atleast a couple of players.

If Rafa wasn't being backed then we'd never have signed Murphy or Gamez.

Rafa himself has stressed several times that he only wants to bring people in if they will improve the squad and be able to step up next season, the lack of signings is probably indicative of the fact that players are unwilling to drop into the Championship or are not available for sale.

It's quite a slow window this January anyway as is evidenced in the fact that 7 PL teams haven't made a single signing yet. Usually incomings mean outgoings, teams wont be willing to let players go unless they have a replacement ready to bring in. We're possibly struggling to buy because clubs cannot replace the players we want.

Rafa wouldn't be walking out at SJP on Wednesday if Ashley had gone back on his word and as Ian correctly said earlier, there is no point worrying over something that may never happen.

Townsend may not want to commit to it.

Then that's the end of that I'd say.

Just a suggestion, who knows, but IF that was the case I'd say he can go and f*** himself to be honest.

I agree if it is but all the reports have suggested that he is keen to come - everything points to the fact that Ashley has a new crane to lift him back up and is trying to play football manager again - we will see but I will be very surprised if anyone comes in by tomorrow of any stature.

If he was keen to come why would we not just pay the £13m and get the deal done? If there's a loan fee which we don't want to pay then that would suggest it's Townsend that wants it to be a loan deal initially.

I reckon it's us who won't commit to the £13m and want a loan in case we don't go up. While we all think we'll go up i suppose paying £13m and getting a player in on Premiership wages would be a risk, if we then didn't go up.

Good point.

Weren't earlier reports saying it was Townsend who wanted the loan first?

Agree with that, but most seem to think he'd take it till the summer.

Hopefully we are just finalising bits like clauses in his contract in case we fail to go up, payment structure etc and everything will be okay tomorrow   Don't think I can be arsed with the Total and utter meltdown there will be.

Villa are 13th?

And they've still managed to attract more central midfielders in that we have.

Would have liked Hourihane here. Looks a good player.

Villa have done well in recruiting Championship players, something we and Rafa are not interested in doing.

Well yeah but Villa really needed to buy, they're 13th and 22 points below us FFS.  If we needed to buy that much and didn't then I'd be livid.  But right now, while I'd like to see us improve, I wouldn't be distraught if we waited till the summer.

Exactly, people need to get some sort of perspective.

This. If Rafa showed a genuine interest in any of their signings you really think they'd choose Villa over us?

 yous don't get it like. Benitez wanted at least a couple of players. He's went on record saying he wants a winger and a central midfielder. He hasn't gotten any of them (he may get 1 if Palace bring down their price or we cave and pay up - providing the reports are true).

We only have 2 Championship quality central midfielders, you kna, the league we're actually in? Lansbury (cunt aye) would be a massive improvement and cost Villa a few million.
