And I followed Newcastle religiously for 40+ years , first team , reserves and anybody remember the "N"s?... Probably not , but it was the youth team whom I also spent time watching. So draw your own conclusions as to where my loyalties lie . I simply made an observation about the match day experiences I encountered at these recent games and didn't suggest this was in any way the status quo . I don't have any ulterior motives , or designs for Internet warriorship for the post..... I've been to 3 games at the ground since - Everton last boxing day, Wolves in the cup the other week and Norwich at home last week. The atmosphere on all 3 occasions has been absolutely desperate bar the last few minutes vs Norwich. I haven't been at a Sunderland home game for a few years. I used to go along for the odd corporate do - the last one being Sunderland v West Ham on a midweek night. The atmosphere then was also absolutely shite. In fact, in recent years, every home atmosphere I've been to has been hopeless apart from Glasgow Rangers games, and I thought Leicester were decent against us last season - they were going for the league and had them stupid clapper things so a good atmosphere was to be expected. I can't think of any other stadium I've visited over the last 5 years or so, where the home crowd have racked up a good atmosphere. I think it's a nationwide problem more than a regional problem with Newcastle/Sunderland. You can't hear a thing on TV and the last time I went (admittedly a few years back now), it was deathly quiet. But it can get going from time to time. The patter about who has the best atmosphere though. Who gives a shit? The atmosphere trophy awaits. Get a grip. We still get a fuckload of people turning up each week, and no wonder people are quiet. We've witnessed the slow death over the club over the past 8 years, as well as the fact that the nature of the football 'fan' is different generally across all clubs. Lots of people paying for entertainment, not to back the team. It isn't a surprise that the first and most commercialised club, Man U, were the first to reference 'prawn sandwiches'. Benwell Lad Posted October 3, 2016 Share Posted October 3, 2016 Can't believe that strange post from our new 65 year old poster has provoked such a reaction and the discussion which followed I still think SJP and indeed around the town on match days has a decent atmosphere compared to most. I have been in the stadium and thought it was quiet but spoken to people in other parts of the ground who said it was loud - maybe it just doesn't carry or resonate well. It still gets very loud on occasions but it takes a particular game or passage of play to kick start it. I prefer this "natural" atmosphere rather than the artificial, orchestrated stuff you get in Germany for example, where it is choreographed and bears little relation to what is actually happening on the pitch. Can't really speak about the SoS but before they moved to that oversized, free ticket, plastic arena and they had a proper ground it was quite canny at Roker Park. I went to around 10 games at Ibrox last year and it was a marked improvement on anything I've seen in England in recent times. The 4-0 Quarter Final win over Dundee was superb. I was there on Saturday vs Partick and the atmosphere was very good for an hour, but died off towards the end as did the game as Rangers killed the game off to preserve the 2-0 lead.
